With India launching Mangalayan, Mars orbiter for exploration successfully, in their first attempt, at lowest budget ever, Innovation seems to be picking on more momentum from the garden innovation city of Bangalore.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi termed it as huge step forward and as one of the examples that he wants to use to explain the potential through his ambitious “Make in India” campaign, where he is inviting global and indian businesses to start thinking about making in india.

To do our bit at SAP Labs India, we are continuing to innovate  on software products that can help the global businesses of all sizes run better… from the Kirana shops with SAP Ganges… to leading enterprises such as CEAT to accelerate their business with SAP HANA… to hospitals exploring Google glasses to help doctors better diagnose and cure patients…. to smart vending that can help global consumer product companies offer more personalized connect with their consumers….it’s all happening here in SAP Bangalore Labs.

To showcase all of these innovations to our customers, partners and co-employees, we conducted our annual Product Innovation Summit 2014 out of our Innovation Labs campus, that included the recently added design bazaar apphaus, in Bangalore. This was a unique opportunity for our customers and partners, especially in India, to directly meet our development and innovation teams to understand the innovations that are happening in the area of Applications, Analytics, Cloud, Big Data, Internet of Things, Design and User Experience and Database Technologies that can help them get ready for future of business.

The Innovation summit was kick started by Srikant Gopalakrishnan, Vice President, Product Management at SAP Labs where he covered how SAP’s innovations are getting businesses to run simpler.

The most exciting aspect of such events is when customers come and share how the innovations have helped their business.

CIO Niranjan Bhalivade of CEAT India, , leading manufacturer of tyres shared how SAP HANA has significantly helped them close their books faster, leaving more time for analysis and how its already helping them understand insights in real time to react to market changes. CIO mentioned that the HANA investment ROI came directly from Inventory getting better and rest was all bonus.  He also mentioned “3 Tb db of oracle becomes 800 gb db post getting sap systems on HANA, and he also got feedback from users that there was something wrong with reporting as it came in so fast”.

Dr. Heinz Haefner who leads Cross Product Management & Customer Services shared how SAP Chairman Hasso Plattner insists that development need to get closer to customers. He shared one of the avenues how customers can influence is through influence.sap.com , where they can directly work with SAP Labs colleagues.

After the keynotes, there was lot of exciting sessions, demos, user experience labs where customers can try out few new user interfaces and provide their feedback and more.  The main focus was on the quality of content presented, educational and interactive. Overall the participants were very satisfied.

Demo JAM was one of the highlight of the innovation summit, as customers were mingled with developers into a team to create an idea to innovation in very short time. The team just had 6 minutes to present back what they have created and winners were selected based on that.

Internet of Things showcase

Couple of compelling stuff in the Product Innovation summit that got lot of excitement was in the Innovation centre – where latest technologies in “Internet of Things” area were showcased. The Smart Vending was one of them, which enabled a simulator on top of the vending machine and that could connect to your consumer who walks in, recommends him based on his interests and allows him even to buy or gift items. Designed and developed working with customers, the smart vending is going to be a great use case for Internet of Things, you can find more about this in this blog.

The other showcase of the Google Glass demos that opened up customers to start thinking where their businesses can go next with internet of things and their enterprises with SAP.  Here you can find a video which was one of the innovations that can be leveraged by hospitals connecting google glass to SAP IS Medical systems on HANA

Watch a video on how google glass can help hospital staff to better treat patients, integrating to SAP IS Healthcare solutions and with power of SAP HANA

Overall the product innovation summit was a fantastic collaboration opportunity for both customers as well as development team and Biju Balachandran, the chief organizer of the event was very satisfied with the event and shared this in his thank you note “A lot of customers we spoke to confirmed that attending this event once a year, not only offered them a lot of product insights and learnings, but also presents them with networking & eco system support that enables them to stay ahead in the industry.”

Innovation is at the center of this country and SAP Labs is doing its bit helping business adopt latest and greatest technology..
