Hello All,

in this blog, I wanted to discuss about – Name Formats functionality in Employee Central.

Many software products only support the Western name format, which is first name, middle name, last name. But this is quite awkward for many countries in the world as different countries have different customs, e.g. In China it is common to have the name format as Last name followed by First name. In Spain, it is a common practice to include mothers last name as middle name. In India, it is even more complicated, with different cultures co-existing together. e.g. in Tamil Nadu, a state in India, it’s common to have initial of the father’s name in place of the last name. In Andhra Pradesh, they use the first letter of the ancestor’s town in the beginning and so on.

In Employee Central, customers can define their preferred name format per company. They can either select one of the 60 country specific formats we deliver, or configure a new one by assembling various name elements. This defined name format becomes the default for all employees. However an employee can overwrite the default so that the Chinese employee working in an Indian company can keep his Chinese name.

The formatted name accordingly can be used for various reporting features as well as in people search.

Isnt’ that a cool feature?

Regards,

Priyanka

    Hi,

very good thought and idea. Definitely we can do this. As in one of our requirement on this lines, we created a Z table and we use to update that Z table fields like name1, name2, name3… and we use to concatenate based on the country key like say suppose for EU ‘ ‘concatenate name1 name2 name3 into name4’ or say for India ‘concatenate name3 name1 name2 into name4’. If we have standard solution then it is a good one.

    Best regards,

Yes. We do have. But some far roll-outs and also for LBS, we followed this path to be a bit friendly in this. Not completely customized but used for some certain areas and say suppose if the naming standards aren’t properly maintained and uploaded then we may face some issues. So we made these fields as mandatory while loading itself and proceeded.

        Thanks.

    Hi Priyanka,

As per my seggestion we can create one custom table where we can add one name field which data element will be 30 charters long then when need to save name we can easyly save name in this field by using only special saperator after that we will retrive the name as per country code we can easy decode the name format.

    Thanks,

    Soumen

      Hi Soumen,

sorry for the late reply, was away from SCN for some time. There are countries where there are multiple name elements and all these name elements put together alongwith separator can easily exhaust 30 characters. Plus the separator also depends on various countries. This formatted name needs to be shown in various reports and on screen searches as well. The standard delivered functionality does all this.

      Regards,

      Priyanka
