Conflict situation – handling fallacies
“You are suggesting this product only because you were part of the product team”
“You say this plan will not work because you always tend to miss deadlines”
”Why should I provide more documentation where as you have provided minimal documentation for your part.”
“Quality team always complains about defects in my code , there appraisal depends on raising issues.”
“You can’t complaint for delays as you only asked me to follow new process “
You may hear some of these statements around us while working in team while in conflict situation. These statements are typical examples of “Ad Hominem” .
Ad Hominem” is most common of the type of fallacy faced during conflict and the term literally means ” an argument or reaction arising from or appealing to the emotions and not reason or logic”
To understand the underlying interests, needs, and concerns, ask for other person’s viewpoint and provide required openness and empathy .Try to understand issues with clarity and clarify your feelings.
Also, Understand the issue objectively as it may be impacting performance, quality of deliverable , and may cause indecisiveness
Your optimism will help conflicting team members to agree on providing inputs, leading to a resolution; you need to show certain degree of openness to all ideas including those that you did not think of before. Brainstorm all possible solutions based on the inputs.
Once you arrive at a solution, make it transparent to all involved.
