In the same way that cars in Germany require a TÜV inspection for roadworthiness at certain, pre-determined intervals, data centers should also have to demonstrate their operation-worthiness. Ultimately, this benefits both data center operators and users. Last month the SAP Data Centers I and II in St. Leon-Rot have both been re-audited for the fourth time by TÜV Rheinland and once again received Premium Certification for energy efficiency, 97.0% for Data Center I and  98.7% for Data Center II.

This achievement represents the joint efforts and close collaboration of SAP Global Facility Management and SAP IT, who continuously strive to improve the company’s green technology and efficiency.

The energy efficiency audit consists of six categories: QA System, Management, Air Condition, Power Supply, IT Environment and Other. Data Centers I and II both achieved the highest possible points in three of the six categories which led to both centers being issued with Premium Certification. This is only issued if at least 85 % of the total performance and less than 60 % of the points in maximally one test criterion have been achieved.

SAP’s data centers are not only energy efficiency in regards to processes but also on a technical level. The competent staff is another important factor. With specified knowledge, they understand the need for a proactive, constant improvement of the data centers efficiency. The staff have even developed and  xecuted numerous innovative solutions themselves. The audit results include potential improvements that could make the centers even more efficient. However, SAP’s data centers resulted with the highest possible certification (Premium) that there is “only” minimal potential to increase the ranking any further.
