Surprisingly, only few people know about how much big companies like SAP are involved into Open Source. Let’s change that! Big companies are often defining software standards but also need to implement existing ones - so there is a big need for Open Source to drive adoption and be compatible with other products!

Join us for the introductory session of the “Open Source in Big Companies” meet up series and get a high level introduction on why this is a very valuable but also necessary combination. In this first meet up, we will present SAP's involvement in Open Source and outline recent projects. Furthermore, you can expect an external Open Source speaker sharing insights from another big company!

What can you expect?

Dealing with Open Source isn’t as easy as one would expect. In fact, it can get very complex! Learn why and how big companies make use of or contribute to Open Source projects. With this series, we’ll try to get a common understanding of challenges and best practices for Open Source in a complex setting. This will be truly a tech meet up, so you can expect more technical presentations in the future. We will just start off high level to set the stage.

..Oh, and obviously there will be beer & pizza!

Who should attend our meet up series?

Every developer or dev-lead in the Bay Area who is interested in Open Source challenges, concepts, benefits, and best practices of Open Source initiatives in bigger companies like SAP. After the introductory session, the meet ups will get more technology-oriented - tech-insights and showcases of Open Source initiatives will be presented. Not a single developer should miss that!

When and where is the meet up?

The meet up will take place on July 9th in the Cafeteria of Building 3 at the SAP Palo Alto campus.

How does the agenda look like?

  • 6:00PM - 6:30PM: Networking
  • 6:30PM - 7:30PM: First Talk by Sanjay Patil (including Q&A)
  • 7:30PM - 8:30PM: TBA: Second Talk (including Q&A)
  • 8:30PM - 9:00PM: Final Networking

What are the talks about?

We will have two speakers attending our meet up (internal and external). Sanjay Patil will be taking on the SAP perspective ("Open Source in Enterprise Software"). Please find further details on the meetup.com announcement. The second speaker/talk will be announced soon!

What is the long term plan?

We will set the stage with the first meet up to give the attendees an high-level overview of Open Source efforts with and outside of SAP. On a long-term, the meet ups will get more technical. We will bring tech speakers to showcase how they deal with specific usage or contribute to Open Source projects, e.g. one could demonstrate a recent Open Source project implementation and how the aligned it to their needs.
