Civic Hactivism – Code for America

In the SAP Developer Center, Alexander Graebe wrote this blog, Have You Ever Heard of Code for America?

In their 2013 annual report, Code for America tells powerful stories. For example the Human Services Agencies (HSA) — City of San Francisco and San Mateo County — partnered with Code for America to improve service delivery. San Francisco Fellows learned that some clients of HSA inadvertently lost benefits due to misunderstood or overlooked communications. As a result, the would have to enroll for benefits again, and would lose food assistance while their benefits were being re-instated. “To fix the cycle, the team built Promptly, a notification system to send clients a text message when their benefits were at risk. Since launch, already half of the users who have received a text notification have been able to avoid losing their food assistance. Despite the wide use of cell phones in our society, the HSA was the first San Francisco agency to text their clients.”

We are delighted that SAP recently announced that we will be a Code for America sponsor in 2014 to support our Urban Matters Initiative. SAP developers, students, and partners are invited to join in this effort – and live SAP’s mission to improve people’s lives.
