My First Code Jam – ABAP on HANA in Hyderabad

INTRODUCTION:

In this blog I would like share my experience with the first code jam event on ABAP on HANA that was held at Hyderabad at TCS on May 30th 2014. Over all it was very good experience to know about the role of HANA in ABAP. In all more than 25 participants met there with three experts on the field to teach, guide and motivate us from the technical perspective.

CODE JAM:

The event first started with the short introduction by Padma, who propelled the interest over the session with her elaborate explanations on needs, pros and cons of ABAP on HANA. As soon as the introduction got over we started with practical session.

Initially we were facing problems with the network issues which was quickly resolved by the active volunteers of TCS. After the Eclipse tool installation in our machine we started with the well compiled exercise questions which was solely prepared for this event.

The event paused for a very good lunch organized by TCS and then the flow continued. We were well assisted by the experts Padma, Sundaresan in resolving our technical doubts.

TECHNICAL INFORMATION:

Though I could not summarize all the technical knowledge I have gained, I would like enlist few points below:

1)  ABAP on HANA has a very good impact on performance level, since HANA helps us with in memory computing.

2)  The syntax differs at certain instance when we code with HANA.

3)  The concept is whenever we want to use the older functionalities in ABAP there is no change in the syntax, but if we want to enjoy the privileges of ABAP on HANA we should follow different syntax.

4)   For instance the concatenation using HANA is done by the below syntax,

Lv_string = | Hello { sy-uname } , how are u ! |

5)   From the above syntax we can concatenate the user name with the text that we have entered.

6)   We can download the eclipse tool that we use, it is an open source tool which will be available in the below link,

http://www.eclipse.org/downloads/

7)   This eclipse tool is of Kepler version 4.3 only this version or Juno version 4.2 can support this HANA features. For more information on installation refere below link,

https://tools.hana.ondemand.com/#abap courtesy SAP.

8)   The SAP GUI version must be 7.2 or more than that.

9)    All the installation details was given as the first assignment in the exercise problems which helped us in improving with the look and feel of the tool.

10)  The assignments that was given to us can be taken from the link below, this will surely help you in improving your technical knowledge.

11)  You can refer to my blog below for basic understanding about the tool, which I gained through Tech –Ed online session.

CONCLUSION:

I would like to thank Mahesh Kumar CV who has been the root cause for organizing this event. Thanks Mahesh for your effort and we are expecting more such events from you.

I also thank Padma, Sundaresan Krishnamurthy and the other expert who helped us in clearing our doubts.

Finally a big thanks to TCS for organizing this big event and helping the beginners with their careers.

A big thanks to SCN for all the efforts it has put in nurturing the beginners and all 🙂 🙂 🙂
