How to Set up Easy Conditional Formatting Design Studio 1.3

One of the new features in Design Studio 1.3 is setting up Conditional Formatting without relying on the underlying BEx query set up.

First as shown above I select a chart, and one of the properties is Conditional Formatting.

Create a new rule by clicking in the “New Rule” button.

In my example I want to highlight in red projects over budget.  I name the rule and state that if the balance is less than 0 show it in red.

The example above shows the project overbudget in red.

This is very easy to set up and you don’t have to rely on the BEx query to set up conditional formatting.

  • Thanks for sharing Tammy. I was expecting advanced formatting for Crosstab in 1.3 release similar to Charts. but no update on it! I am working on big project on Desing Studio and have lot of drill downs and custom headers n more on Crosstab.

Is there any plan for enhancing Crosstab properties options?

  • Hi Tammy,

Thanks a lot for this information.

Now I am working with DS 1.3 SP01 and I am trying to apply conditional formatting to a Tree Map but it doesn’t work.

I always get the standard green color.

The point is that in DS 1.3 but when I opened the dashboard in SP01 it didn’t work. I have also tried rebuild the chart but it still does’nt work.

It seems as if the start-end colors always prevail over the conditional formatting.

    Has anyone faced this issue?

    • Juan – I just tried it on a treemap and it works for me.

Maybe create new discussion thread with more details here on the forum and use the camera icon to share your chart, conditional formatting and the community can help see why it may not be working.

      • Hi Tammy, thanks for quick response.

I’ve tried again and building the chart from scratch on SP01 works fine but the charts migrated from 1.3 don’t work fine, I think we will have to rebuild them.

        Thanks for the information.

  • Hi Tammy,

I am in need of dynamic conditional formatting in charts, to be done in design studio level. I am using Design Studio 1.4 version.
I couldn’t find any positive result from the relevant threads or blogs/document posts, all of them stated it can’t be done in DS without having the exceptions declared in BEx.

    Could you please help?

    Best Regards,

    • Hey Sara, I hope you are doing well!  I don’t have a specific answer to your question, however this is a relatively old release (and discussion thread.)  You may be stuck with a lot of limitations in 1.4.  Do you have plans to move off of it soon?  The SAP PAM states that 1.4 reaches end of maintenance in Nov of this year.  Many more options available in higher releases!

      • Hey Mike, Am good, Thanks ,hope you are doing good too !

Thanks again for your prompt reply! I ll look for the possibility to get it upgraded to 1.6. J

  • Hi Tammy,

I am using a input ready query in Crosstab. the conditional formatting does not work once I set the query in Input ready mode to true. However it works fine if the inputReady mode is false. Could you please suggest?

    • Hello Arpan –

Thank you for reading and commenting

Unfortunately I don’t have an input-ready query on my systems to try this myself; I suggest you create a  discussion at so the community can assist
