Sagem ranks among the world’s key players in avionics, inertial guidance, infrared optoelectronics,
image stabilization, and image processing for the aerospace and defense
industry. A member of the Safran group, we drive advances in technologies that make
aircraft and ships more efficient in their civilian and military functions. Our
components and systems are at the heart of combat aircraft such as the
venerable Mirage fighter, the multirole Rafale, the NH90 transport and antiship
helicopter, the Tiger antitank helicopter, and advanced unmanned air vehicles
(UAVs).

Time for a game change

Approaching the end of its useful life span, our
existing Oracle database solution was no longer up to the challenge. It
provided only limited housekeeping functions for our SAP Business Warehouse (SAP
BW) application. We faced performance issues – compounded by occasional outages
– to the detriment of our business. Rapidly-growing data volumes proved
increasingly difficult to manage. Reporting was slow and cumbersome. Data
access was too restrictive for actionable analysis or to support timely
decisions.

The systems we manufacture rely on exploiting
real-time information to support our customers in fulfilling their mission. And
we wanted no less for our own business processes. We were looking for a
platform that would provide our business with real-time insight into key processes
for well-informed decisions. To reach these goals, we
decided to migrate our proven SAP BW application to the SAP HANA platform. The
idea was to leverage cutting-edge in-memory computing technology to deliver on
the business needs of Sagem.

Smooth transition to in-memory computing

We took advantage of the SAP MaxAttention
offering to accelerate the migration of SAP BW to SAP
HANA. With professional guidance, implementation best
practices, and hands-on support from the SAP Active Global Support (SAP AGS)
organization, the migration was completed exactly on schedule. It went
smoothly, with no disruption to the business. At the same time, we upgraded our
SAP BW software to make data available to more users.

Hard facts

The results of our switch to SAP HANA are
compelling. Our business users instantly experienced a major performance boost.
The average query execution time was reduced by 93.7%, from 112.86 to merely
7.07 seconds. Cache execution was accelerated from 135 down to 2.6 seconds –
equivalent to a reduction of 98%. Data load times were cut by 56.5%, from 531
to 231 seconds. Data activation times were shortened by 94.1%, from 699 to 41
seconds. The inherent data compression of SAP HANA reduced our data volume by 79.4%,
from 2.15 TB down to 443 GB.

Tangible business benefits

The in-memory computing technology harnessed by the
SAP HANA platform has fully delivered on our expectations. Our database volume has been reduced by orders of magnitude, also reducing
the workload on IT administrators. Data activation, loading, and analyses have
been accelerated by orders of magnitude. The massive performance boost
delivered through SAP HANA enables us to increase the breadth and depth of
analysis while providing information of the right granularity for each user
role.

Today, key users at Sagem are empowered to perform
queries in self-service mode using SAP Business Explorer tools without having
to involve the IT organization. SAP BW powered by SAP HANA supports users in the
financial and supply chain areas in their daily reporting tasks. All 400 users
at Sagem are able to collect their data with much greater ease and speed,
freeing up precious time for activities that contribute to the bottom line –
such as focusing on customer needs.

Managers gain vital insight into the heartbeat of
our business with support for making faster and smarter decisions. Reporting, controlling, and financial closes have become faster than
ever at Sagem, helping us navigate and control our business with the same
speed, agility, and precision that we provide to our customers.

Value delivery made visible

Thanks
to SAP HANA and SAP MaxAttention, the value of the services delivered by the
IT organization has become much more visible to our business units, putting communication
between IT and the business on a new footing. For instance, SAP HANA provides
Sagem with the ability to leverage predictive functionalities, enabling us to
walk through a number of business scenarios. Insight thus gained enables us to
identify and quickly adapt to changing customer needs, optimize R&D and
manufacturing processes, and fine-tune our supply chain and inventories.
Affiliates of Sagem share the same in-memory computing technology, simplifying
and accelerating custom product developments.
