In-memory Data Management

While the processing speeds have increased, the cost of the main memory storage has gone down considerably. This has given rise to a new paradigm in enterprise application.

In today's enterprise world we have a three tier architecture with Application layer managing the logic, UI layer managing the user experience and a separate  Database system as the DB layer.

This setup will change with database management moving closer to application layer. Data will be residing in main memory itself which means that the access to data by application will be much faster and will give real time response to the most complex algorithms possible.

Since, main memory uses simpler algorithm and need fewer CPU instructions, data managed in the main memory results in better performance. In this new approach, all the processed information will be kept in main memory, as mentioned above, and disks will only be used for archiving, backup and recovery.  Hasso Plattner, co-founder of SAP, contends that main memory storage and multi core processing packaged together in a single server yields unprecedented speeds.

Database Management system based on the concept of in-memory data management will allow the data to be analyzed in real-time and will support interactive decision making.

The in-memory data management layer will revolutionize the way how traditional OLTP applications work. Not only will they become faster with a factors upto 1000, but also eliminate the need to store the redundant data for data analysis.
