No longer necessary to reduce the number of sensor values:

With the latest developments like “the internet of things,” sensor networks, connectivity everywhere with high bandwidths, in-memory-computing, and practically unlimited processing power, there is no longer a need to cut the number of sensor values used to optimize installed machinery performance.

SAP can support our customers and partners in managing data from technical sources like machine sensors and draw conclusions to improve products and make them more efficient for operators.  With the SAP Real Time Data Platform (RTDP) on HANA, the technology is now available to crunch numbers much faster with greater flexibly than by using traditional industrial architectures.

Example:

Here is one scenario where SAP helped a manufacturer turn standard technical data into valuable business insight:

By assisting the human engineer with the statistical analysis of large volumes of complex data, the RTDP on HANA provides a truly scalable data analysis never before possible  Typical technical solutions to be considered are map-reduce, cluster-based solutions and analytical databases.  With these types of solutions, the data analysis must be supervised by a human engineer in an iterative process.  This process requires sub-second response times from the system, and such fast response times can be only guaranteed by a scalable, in-memory analytical system like SAP RTDP on HANA.


Issue:

The machines used are equipped with quite a high number of sensors delivering all kind of information on the state of the machine and the production process, but the sheer number of parameters and values exceed the capabilities of current IT architectures.


Consequences:

1.) Because of these technology constraints, only a subset of aggregated values are currently monitored.
2.) Additionally, the right parameter values to monitor the machine can only be determined by trial and error due to the complexity of the system.


Solution:

With the SAP RTDP, it is now possible to work with a much higher quantity and quality of detailed data, exploring information beyond the beaten track of traditional, pre-aggregated records.  The RTDP identifies additional parameter sets which are helpful in monitoring the performance of the machine by scanning through combinations of parameter values and finding how precisely they correlate to the production outcome.


How:

Using a complex, iterative analysis over very large data sets and automatically detecting the best parameter sets determines many correlations as well as a reduction of the parameter sets necessary to run the analysis. Redundant parameter sets are identified by a semi-automatic interactive process where a human engineer looks at the data and results, sets variations, re-runs the analysis, and finally decides on the optimal set of parameters to monitor the manufacturing equipment in a given context.

The SAP solution has increased the output of the production process and reduced the number of defective parts associated with the machinery
