Basics of Information Design Tool – Part 1 – Create Universe.

In this Document, we can discuss about how to create basic universe using Information Design Tool.

In this demo, we will create Universe using Relational data source

Step1: Create Project:

To create a Project you need to go through File -> New -> Project.

Step2: Create a Connection:

you can either create a Relational Connection or OLAP Connection.

For this demo, i created a Relational connection.

While creating new Relational connection, you need to specify the Database Middleware Driver from the list shown below.

/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/1_jpg_412805.png

I selected MS Access ODBC Driver.

/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/1_jpg_412805.png

Here you need to mention the Parameters for the selected Connection.

Authentication Mode can be :

1. Use specified Username and Password.

2. Use BusinessObjects credential mapping.

If you select the 1st option, then you need to mention username and password.

In the 2nd option, it will automatically take BO credentials.

Specify Data Souce Name and Test the connection.

/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/1_jpg_412805.png

Now open a new Session and specify Parameters

/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/1_jpg_412805.png

In the Parameters,

Connection Pool Mode can be:

1. Keep the connection active for

2. Disconnect after each Transaction

3. Keep the connection active during the whole session (Local Mode Only)

1st option is selected, then you can mention “pool timout minutes” and it will be in disable mode if you selected 2nd or 3rd option.

You can add or delete paramenters if required.

/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/1_jpg_412805.png

Now, Relational Connection is successfully created in “.cnx” format.

/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/1_jpg_412805.png

Now, Under “Show Values” tab of Connection, you can see list of tables that are available.

/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/1_jpg_412805.png

Now, you can see Relational connection under “Local Projects” window.

/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/1_jpg_412805.png

Now i published this connection to the repository.

It will create connection shortcut, if you opted for it.

/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/1_jpg_412805.png

Now connection shortcut is created in “.cns” format and shown under “Local Projects” window as shown below.

/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/1_jpg_412805.png

Step3: Create Data Foundation:

To create Data Foundation go through File -> New -> Data Foundation

Give the Name and Description for the New Data Foundation.

/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/1_jpg_412805.png

Data Foundation can be based on Single Source or Multisource.

Here for this demo, i selected Single Source.

/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/2_jpg_412875.png

Now, select the Connection on which Data Foundation needs to be created.

/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/3_jpg_412880.png

Now Data Foundation is successfully created and shown under “Local Projects” window with “.dfx” format.

/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/4_jpg_412881.png

Now, you can Insert tables into Data Foundation Layer.

/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/5_jpg_412882.png

Insert proper joins between the tables and “Check Integrity”.

Resolve join path problems, if any.

Step4: Create Business Layer

Select the type of data souce for Business Layer. It can be:

Relationa Data Foundation or OLAP Connection.

/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/1_jpg_412805.png

As we created Relation Data Foundation, selected type of data source as “Relational Data Foundation” and selected the Data foundation which is created.

/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/2_jpg_412875.png

Folder and Objects will be automatically created if you opted for. You can create Folders and Objects based on the requirement.

Now, Business Layer added in the “Local Projects” window with “.blx” format

/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/1_jpg_412805.png

Step5: Publish Business Layer

After completing all the required modifications in Business Layer, You can now publish it to repository.

To do this, Right click on Business Layer and select Publish -> To Repository.

Check Integrity and Publish.

/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/5_jpg_412882.png
