This past week I had the distinct pleasure of deeply diving into many of SAP HANA’s capabilities during a three-day SAP HANA Academy Live boot camp. The Big Dig demo room in SAP’s Burlington, Massachusetts office was packed with participants eager to explore their own SAP HANA sandbox with guided tutorials from the SAP HANA Academy team. From connecting to SAP HANA Studio to exploring data in SAP Lumira and SAP Predictive Analysis, the vast amount of useful information the SAP HANA Academy team taught during their SAP HANA Live2 Project provided a strong foundation that will enable me to start harnessing the power of SAP HANA on my own.

On day one Tahir Hussain “Bob” Babar detailed how the Windows box that contained SAP HANA Studio connected to the Linux box. Bob explained the differences between all of the various instances and port numbers necessary to run SAP HANA and also the differences between SAP HANA Studio's various views. Bob demonstrated how to create new users with distinguished rights and walked us through how to load data into SAP HANA.

That afternoon I really enjoyed learning the about how to run Lingua Analysis and Sentiment Analysis on a set of social media data. The ability to quickly categorizing the different sentiments inlaid within the social media dataset was a powerful example of a very useful application of SAP HANA’s speed.  Learn more about Sentiment Analysis by watching this video.

On Day Two Phillip Mugglestone offered a detailed explanation on how Link Predictions works and then walked us through how to create a Link Prediction project in SAP HANA Studio. I founded the multilayered structure of the Link Prediction fascinating and have enjoyed expanding my knowledge of Link Prediction with the videos available from the SAP HANA Academy.

Day three started with an exhibition by Bob on how to load data from SAP HANA into SAP Lumira. Bob then showcased how to create various engaging visualizations and storyboards in SAP Lumira. I picked up some excellent tips about visualizing my data in SAP Lumira such as how to filter data using the sorting feature. Bob offers many useful tips and insights about SAP Lumira in his HANA Live2: Creating an Analytic View for Data Visualizations tutorial video.

In the afternoon of day three Philip presented SAP Predictive Analysis by showcasing how to build a complex process with various algorithms.  Philip illumined the many ways data can be analyzed and visualized with PAL algorithms. Finally, Philip showed how to easily write the data from SAP Predicative Analysis into SAP HANA so it can be analyzed in other applications such as SAP Lumira. Even more information about SAP Predictive Analysis is available here.

SAP HANA Academy Live was an engaging educational experience that I would highly recommend to anyone desiring a hands-on exposure to the capabilities of SAP HANA. All of the information covered during the SAP HANA Academy Live boot camp is available in free video tutorials at the SAP HANA Academy.
