Philip Mugglestone from the SAP HANA Academy examines how to view trace logs in SAP River.

To view the trace log a user must first have administrative access and then click on the Diagnosis Files tab in the configuration window. Due to the fact that SAP River works with XS Engine, Philip explains that filtering the Diagnosis Files by XS Engine retrieves the relevant files. Sorting by modification date and selecting the most recently modified file provides a user with the most up-to-date trace log.

The trace log displays messages, such as when something is running, error messages, and debugging information. Philip mentions that the trace log will only show error messages by default. However, Philip demonstrates the ease in which a user can modify the trace log to see additional details. A user can even write their own messages for the trace log using RDL.

To customize the details reported in the trace log a user must select the pencil icon next to the Database Trace option under the Trace Configuration tab. Philip explains that it is essential for a user to select the Show all Components box at the bottom and type sap.hana.rdl in the top bar to filter for the correct component. Next, in the System Trace Level column a user can select from a variety of tracing options.

Philip’s informative video shows how to use and customize the trace log in SAP River.
