2014 Academic Conference SAP HANA Workshop

Hello All,

This is the page for the 2014 Academic Conference SAP HANA Workshop led by Lorraine Gardiner of California State University Chico.

Workshop materials are available here.

Software installation instructions are available here.

You must be Logged on to comment or reply to a post.
  • Thank you for sending the email with the setup instructions. It took over an hour and a half to work through the multiple program setups, but all the programs and connections worked (even though the port 9000 error still came up, it worked anyway)..

As a heads-up to others, the 3GB download for SAP HANA takes a long time also... about an hour and a half from my location in Texas. There is also the download and  installation of the SAP BO for Office software which will also take a while. I cannot see this being done in the time set aside for the seminar, so again, thanks for the email.

I am now ready and waiting for the conference to begin. See you there!

  • Hello to all,

I'm looking forward to working with everyone in Atlanta.

You will spend most of your time working through a series of exercises in which you

    • Create tables in SAP HANA using SAP HANA Studio
    • Load data into those tables with SAP BusinessObjects Data Services Designer
    • Create attribute and analytic views in SAP HANA
    • Refine the attribute and analytic views to meet additional user requirements
    • Create simple procedures with SQLScript
    • Connect the following tools to your analytic views and use them for exploration and prediction purposes
      • SAP BusinessObjects Explorer
      • Excel (using PivotTables)
      • SAP BusinessObjects Analysis for Microsoft Excel
      • SAP Predictive Analysis

I will make additional postings as questions come in or reminders need to be sent.  The conference materials will also be available shortly.

    See you soon!

  • March 19 webinar clarification:  The purpose of the webinar is to provide an overview of the necessary workshop software installation, configuration and testing plus troubleshoot any problems faculty may be having.  The webinar will not be a good time to attempt the setup since the entire process can take hours.

Please feel free to post questions and/or progress in this forum.  For example, Liz' comment on the time it took for the download and her set up was very helpful.

    • In the PA section, page 31, I get the message that the license has expired. Moveing forward, I do not have "Install and Configure R" available in the file drop down.

Give yourself plenty of time to do this! I started 3 days ago.....

Update: I was able to see the Install and Configure after rebooting. Restart seems to help a lot! I think I have completed everything!

  • Thanx Lorraine for the prep instructions. When I try to install HANA client 32 I get error: Cannot install-cannot update package ODBO- Cannot determine system32 path. I am using Win64-Office32 setup files on my Win 7 laptop.

    Any suggestion? Thanx.

    • In your Windows, go to run and type "regedit" and hit enter.

      After that Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE -> SYSTEM -> CurrentControlSet -> Control->Windows

After that add a string variable by the name "SystemDirectory":

Right Click in the Blank space on the frame in the right workspace

      Give Name as “SystemDirectory”

After this Set its value as your system32 path.

Right click on new variable created in the last step.

Modify->Give value as your System32 path. Generally  “C:/Windows/System32"

After this install HANA Client again

If you get an error with failed registration of MDX open a cmd window and run:

      regsvr32 "C:\Program Files\sap\hdbclient\SAPNewDBMDXProvider.dll”

    • Walter created a document with screenshots about this issue.  We are unable to upload attachments with out posts.  I've sent the document to the UAC team for posting.

  • I am installing the SAP HANA Studio on my computer which has a 64 bit OS and 32 bit Office 2010.  I am getting the error message that I need Java v1.6 or 1.7 64 bit.  I have Java 7 update 24 installed.  When I go to the Oracle site I see Java SE, Java EE, Java ME, Java FX and Java DB.  I don't know what I need to continue with the installation.  Can someone offer some guidance on this?  Thanks.

  • The software installation link provided above opens the document Walter created to address the Win64-Office32 issue that Masoud encountered.

  • Hi Lorraine I finally adding an entry for Kyoto , Thanks for that but now I keep have the notification server error (BODI-1241023) I'm already allowed the port 9000 to firewall already set up Port Forwarding but nothing any suggestion  for that? Will be help !!

    • I believe Liz Simmons also mentioned this issue but was able to complete the connection test.

Unfortunately, I've investigated a little further and while some tasks will work with this error, the data load batch job will not.  I'll follow up with Walter.  One of us will post our findings as soon as possible.

In the meantime, I suggest you try the connection test to SAP HANA on pp. 19-20 and move on with your installation.

        • Hi Lorraine just give head up I'm able to go thru to all process except to run a Hana_ test on pp. 19 and now the Job Server Kyoto:8082 I was able to see and the establishing connecting but and other hands the port 9000 is not responding and the mgs now is not responding ( BODI-1241021) , Thanks

  • The webinar tomorrow will cover only software installation.  If you have successfully wrapped up your installation, there is no need to attend.  Looking forward to seeing all of you in Atlanta!

  • Re SAP BusinessObjects Data Services Designer & Port 9000 Issues:

Other tips from Walter Louie are as follows:

    1. If you perform port forward and the IP address for your PC changes, you will need to modify the forwarding.
    2. You can check whether or not Port 9000 is open by doing the following:

Open Data Services Designer and connect to Kyoto.

Check Port 9000 using the following URL:

Enter 9000 in the first port text box and click "Check."

It should return the message, "Port 9000 on <IP_ADDRESS> is open!"

If not, either forwarding is not set properly or a local or network firewall is blocking traffic.

  • I am on page 32 of the installation instructions trying to install and configure the R library.  When I launch the SAP predictive analysis software, it requests the key code.  When I enter the key code and try to continue the application shuts down even though it says I have 19 days left on a trial license.  I have tried this several times and cannot get past this issue.

    • Hi Gregory,

I assume you are getting to the attached screen. You can go ahead and press Continue here. There is no need to enter your key code again. That should allow you to proceed.

  • I cannot logon to the Business Object Server using the information given on page 14. Error message is login failed to the specified system. There is no data in the repository box.

i was able to make the entry kyoto in the etc host file

    • You may want to double check the hosts file entry to make sure the IP address is correct and you hit return after the entry.  If all is correct, I suggest that you stop by the tech team area.

    • Michael, can you elaborate on what the issues are with virtualization.  I've deployed all the prior tools via VMware but haven't tried to deploy the HANA Studio.

      • I was trying to install into a parallels hosted Windows 8 environment on a Mac. I ran into the port 9000 problem with Data Services Designer which the SAP tech team here says cannot be resolved in an emulated environment. Additionally, they say there is no MDX emulated environment to do the pivot table connection for MAC Office you have to use the Windows versions.
