There’s also been some inspiring video content, including a story about how technology is helping a community to survive economically in the Brazilian desert. And, you told us what you thought would be the next big innovation in a poll, with a cure for cancer coming out on top.

On board to the future

The inspirational stories and ideas we’ve all been engaged with over these last 10 weeks just can’t happen if people don’t look to the future. So, in the spirit of the World of Innovation, I’m staying on board with my journey into the future.

I’ve been captivated by the theme of an innovation report Surfing Toward the Future: Chile in the 2025 Horizon by Fernando Flores. What resonates with me is the “surfing the wave” metaphor. In the same way that surfers can’t control the sea, we can’t control the future. However, as Flores says, surfers can find a path forward by staying in harmony with the waves and being receptive to changes. He summarizes the Innovation Council’s approach as understanding the subtle trends of the present to outline possible future paths.

Ready for the next big wave?

So what are the big waves or trends surging towards us in our fluid and ever-changing environment? In 2012, Hans Vestberg, CEO of Ericsson, predicted that by 2020, 50 billion devices would be connected to the internet. There are a lot of people riding that roller. You can see more trends that will affect your future in 99 Facts on the Future of Business.
