SAP Speeds Up Formula 1 Racing Team
I recently engaged with an automotive engineering company in the South East of England, The Company manufactures everything from automotive components to complete cars for the road and Formula 1 racing.
As the company grows (with over 2000 employees at the last count) their systems were not keeping pace with requirements. The businesses within the company were using different processes. This ranged from outdated software systems to spreadsheets to manage pay, right up to one business which had portal based employee self-service software.
Workshops were used to identify and ultimately solve these business issues.
1. Inconsistent and fragmented processes for different parts of the company
2. Lack of data integration across different:
b. Processes (e.g. Finance and HR)
3. Incorrect employee data due to the administrative burden of maintaining it
4. Corrupt employee data due to software bugs
5. Slow reporting
The implementation of the following SAP HCM modules were proposed. Core HCM and Time Management enabled in the back end and made accessible via Employee Self Service and Manager Self Service. To keep focus of scope and reduce cost it was proposed to do the implementation as a Rapid Deployment Solution.
SAP HCM provided a number of benefits:
1. All employee data stored in a single system, easing data maintenance, accuracy, security and reporting.
2. Employees managing their own data, increasing accuracy and freeing HR administrators to do more value add activities.
3. Integration of:
a. HR costs directly into the SAP Finance
b. Time sheet costs the SAP Project Systems module
4. Managers Self-Service deployment, allowing managers to directly process tasks and bypassing HR administrators for:
a. Absence management and approvals
b. Employee queries
c. Employee reporting
d. Employee transfers and organizational changes
e. Time management and timesheet approvals
5. The opportunity for the business to cleanse data before entering into SAP
Through the middle of the implementation it became apparent that on-site infrastructure was not reliable enough due to a number of factors and the company opted for SAP to host the implementation in the cloud.
We learnt that the company had terabytes of historical racing telemetry data but they were just sitting on it due to a lack of tools to effectively report on them, some reporting would take days. The company agreed to be one of the first adopters in the industry of HANA (or in memory computing).
They moved from disparate, inconsistent processes with duplication (of effort and data) to a single system with one instance of all data. Many requests and approvals are handled directly between employees and managers, freeing HR administrators to work on more value-add tasks. Employee data is comprehensive and more importantly accurate. If the company chooses to streamline processes with other HCM (or non HCM) modules, the groundwork has already been done for implementation and integration.
Moving to the hosted environment in the cloud had an immediate noticeable improvement to system reliability and performance.
