    Hi,

I see you have upgraded directly from 11.7 to 4x, which i think is not a recommended step by SAP. Older versions have to be upgraded first to 3x and then to 4x.

      Hi Arun,

No as per SAP standard you have to first migrate the local repository from 11.7 to 3.2 then from 3.x to 4.x.

Exactly i am doing the same deployment.

My local repository version is BODI11.7 then i migrated to BODS3.2  to BODS 4.X

      Thanks,

      Daya

I’m sorry if it is a naive question but I fail to understand the repository upgrade table. How exactly to upgrade from DI 11.7 to DS 3.X to DS 4.X? Is there an option in the repository manager to select the desired repository version?

Also, we’re planning an upgrade from DI 11.5 to DS 4.2 SP1. Will the steps mentioned by you work fine or is there anything else that needs to be done?

        1. Daya Jha Post author

There is no option to select desired repository version upgrade, first you have to upgrade to 3.x then 4.x using same SAP Business Objects Data Services Repository manager.

          Thanks,

          Daya

        Hi Daya,

So just to clarify. Can you please confirm if I understand this correct?

You had BODS 11.7 with 11.7 repository

        1. So you cloned the 11.7 repository database to a new server

        2. Installed BODS4.2 on the new server with the 11.7 repository database

        3. After upgrade, when you launch designer you get the error repository version is old

        4. Use the BODS4.2 repository manager to migrate from 11.7 repository to 4.2 in one shot (I only see one screenshot for this)

        Regards,

        Srithar

          Hi Srithar,

          Regarding your query

          1. So you cloned the 11.7 repository database to a new server

          Reply: Yes

          2. Installed BODS4.2 on the new server with the 11.7 repository database

Reply: Migrated schema/database in New environment (Oracle/SQL Server,DB2, etc….) and deploy backup of 11.7 local repository

          3. After upgrade, when you launch designer you get the error repository version is old

Reply: No Completion of DB activity you have to upgrade local repository with new database/schema information using SAP Business Objects Repository Manager

          4. Use the BODS4.2 repository manager to migrate from 11.7 repository to 4.2 in one shot (I only see one screenshot for this)

        Daya,

In the installation guide, there is a section about using “DSXI40UPGRADEMGR” to migrate all objects from older version to newer version. If i had already migrated all repositories using REPO manager, do I have to run this batch file?

No not required after upgrade using SAP Business Objects Repository manager you have updated your old repository to new version then add it in CMC and then set rights and security, After that login and validate your all configurations and setting of all Jobs and then test with sample input file.

          Thanks.

    Hi Daya,

Thanks much for this article! šŸ˜€

I’m going to migrate from DS 3.1 to DS 4.1. Can you please tell me whether the following files need to replaced in the newly installed server or not required?

    • admin.xml
    • sapconnections.xml
    • as.xml
    • dsconfig.txt

    Thanks in advance,

    1. Daya Jha Post author

      Hi Parthiban,

If you want to use the same Data services configuration configuration,Same Access Server Configuration, Same DS Config Configuration & RFC configuration what you have in BODS 3.2 then use the same config file and map at the time of installation

      • admin.xml
      • sapconnections.xml
      • as.xml
      • dsconfig.txt

Best way is create this configuration new in BOBJ 4.X verion

      Thanks,

      Daya

    Another question, Please help:

    Thanks in Advance,

Not Possible on the same box, best way is just replicate the schema of local repository and then update the replica of local repository in new box.

Do  the changes and then if you need any thing from BODS 3.2 box take it from there.

      Thanks,

      Daya

We are on IPS 4.0 SP6 P6. Do we use the “Install & upgrade” software downloads or the Support Pack & patches (update)”  to get to IPS 4.1 SP02 ?

    >IPS 4.1 SP02 install >IPS 4.1 SP02 P1- update >IPS 4.1 SP02 P2 – update

    or just

    >IPS 4.1 SP02 – Update >IPS 4.1 SP02 P1- update >IPS 4.1 SP02 P2 – update

Or I think the patches are cummulative so do one of these:

    >IPS 4.1 SP02 install > IPS 4.1 SP02 P2 – update

    or

    >IPS 4.1 SP02 – Update >IPS 4.1 SP02 P2 – update

    1. Daya Jha Post author

Currently you are performing upgrade of BOIPS application, So please use Support Pack & patches (update)

      >IPS 4.1 SP02 – Update >IPS 4.1 SP02 P2 – update

      Thanks,

      Daya

We just upgraded to DS 4.2 on Linux in this order:

    1.    1.     Information Platform Services

                   From: IPS 4.0 SP6 P6 >IPS 4.1 SP02 Update >IPS 4.1 SP02 Patch 2 Update

    2.    2.    Data Services

Be sure to add the DS 4.2 License Keys before starting or update will fail.

                   From: DS 4.1 SP2 P0 >DS 4.2 SP01 P2

    4.    4.    Information Steward

                   From: IS 4.1 SP2 P0 > IS 4.2 SP01 P2

    Note:

    • Be sure you are not logged on as root.
    • On Linux we had to use the DS temporary license key. We have customer incident open, will try to remove the temp key now that we are upgraded.
    • All our $LINK_DIR/DataDirect/odbc/odbc.ini connection information was overwritten with the DataDirect 7.1 from 6.1. Be sure you have it backed up.
    • Also the ODBC library driver names changed. i.e. MSSQL $LIN_DIR/DataDirect/odbc/lib/DAsqls26.so changed to DAsqls27.so
    • If your Information Steward Repository is on Oracle RAC, you must create a connection file & supply the path/file name during update.

    Hi Daya,

Thanks for sharing this informative document.

I have a question but not related to this document… In our requirement we are extracting a data from BW (Source), and we have the jobs which ran hourly basis, but sometimes due to huge volume the first job will take more time than expected, and the second job which ran on schedule basis will proceed further by failing the first job. So we came with a solution by maintaining some script logic at designer level, that first job need to proceed as it is but by failing the second job, and its in progress.

But apart from that, we are looking for some other new solution which will hint the Source system directly before the trigger sends to BODS like eventing or script at the backend.

So can you please throw some light on this..

    Thanks,

    Sameer

    Hello, Daya,

I have upgraded the BODS 4.1 to the BODS 4.2. But I am not able to upgrade some repositories. There are some SQL errors in some repositories, they do not allow the repository upgrade.

I am not the BODS developer. I am the BODS administrator. What could you recommend me to fix SQL errors?

    These are the errors: SQL0613N, SQL1216N, SQL0727N

I do not want you to fix it. I am just kindly asking you to give me a hook.

Is it possible to fix them by BODS Designer?

    Thank you.

      Hi,

from my point of view, there is only manual upgrade of customer repositories needed. Everything else has been upgraded by installation process.

Please, do not forget to check prerequisites for BODS 4.2 fresh new installation, because in the BODS 4.2 Upgrade guide I missed for example an information about increased size of TEMP table-space into DB2, what caused a trouble with repositories mentioned above.

Thanks for your reply. Will take care of the pre-requisites for sure.

Also, could you or anyone else please help me know the DR strategy for DS. We will be having a separate DR environment for DS 4.2. So, want to know the DR strategy/steps for the same.

        Thanks,

        Kunal

    Hi.

I am not a SAP BODS guy, but I need to upgrade an environment to 4.2 SP5.

    I am currently on 4.1 SP1.

Can I follow this doc above for my upgrade process?

Also, how do i backup the respositories etc.? Would backup of the DBs would be fine?

It would be really helpful if someone can point out.

    Thanks in Advance

    1. Jay Roble

You should be able to follow the doc above.

You can backup your DB, I know with Oracle, our DBA can restore just one Schema/repo if needed.

Here is link to the SAP help for Data Services 4.2. You can find an installation planning video, Installation, Upgrade, System Admin guides tther.

      Hope that helps

    Hi Daya Jha ,

We are planning for BODS 3.2 to 4.2 upgrade.

    Database is Oracle 11g.

In previous assignment during up-gradation from 3.2 to 4.0 (BODS) we faced some issue post up gradation.

The one of major issue we faced was as follows:

In 3.2 , we have defined multiple join conditions for multiple tables in a job but after upgrade to 4.0  all the conditions mentioned in where clause remains same (In where clause only) . Since in 4.0 all the join conditions should be present in from clause instead of where clause.

Because of this all the jobs which were taking 4-5 minutes in 3.2  are taking now taking 30-40 minutes because of Cartesian product in 4.2

Someone has already raised the same issue with SAP. Below is the link for same.

1875746 – Data Services outer join data flow runs much long after upgrading from version 3.2 to 4.0

Would you please help to find whether same issue will occur during upgrade of 3.2 to 4.2?

    I would be great help.

Also can you please help me out with the known issues on development side which will help me in regression testing.

    Thanks,

    Swapnil

    Hello Daya

Very useful post!!!!. Does these steps also apply for “updating” only Support Packages and patches on the same release? (For instance update from DS 4.2 SP1 to  DS 4.2 SP 7 patch 2)

I ask you this becasue we actually have been requested to perform this update activity on our DS environment which currently is at the following level:

    1  –   SAP Data Services 4.2  SP1 Patch 1

    2  –   SAP Information Steward 4.2  SP1

    4  –   Information platform services 4.1 SP2

    DB

Oracle Database 11g Enterprise Edition Release 11.2.0.3.0

    SO

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 (x86_64)

    VERSION = 11

    PATCHLEVEL = 4

However in SAP portal there is only the  DS Upgrade guide and the DS Installation Guide which are not very specific on the SP package and patch steps.

We really appreciate your help !!!

Thank you for your answer Daya,

From your recomendations I can see the pre-activities steps includes:

        • Backup repositories, configuration files and data cleanse files.
        • Create a Check list of Number of:

-Batch Jobs/Real Time Jobs, Number of Access Server, Number of Job Server &           Configuration Path (Datastore) of Source & Target Systems.

–Jobs Scheduling in SAP Business Objects Data Services Management Console.

Groups & Users Available in SAP Business Objects Data Services Management                      Console

In our scenario  (update from DS 4.2 SP1 to  DS 4.2 SP 5 patch 2) this back up and check list preactivites only are done as a preventive ones in case of any issue? or the SP and Patch installer will override all DS customization and current configuration we have in our DS environment?

We ask you this since in SAP market place within Support Packages and patches section we can see the Software comes all togheter named as SBOP DATA SERVICES 4.2 SP05 PL 2 as it was a full installation.

We have performed BO SP and Updates where as you know no configurations or customizations are removed but In the case of DS we are little confused  since we currently have configured things like:

        -DQM RFC Server

        – DQM Real Time Services

        -Batch Job schedules

        -Groups and Users.

So again our main concern is if the SP and Patch installer overrides all DS customization and current configuration we have in our DS environment?

        We really appreciate your help!!

        Alex
