I am a Development Expert and have been with SAP since 2000.  In the last 3.5 years focusing on SAP HANA, Infrastructure Management and Cloud.  I work at SAP Labs, Palo Alto, California USA, part of the SAP Technology Innovation Platform group, Strategic Customer Engagement team.

Towards the end of November Franklin Herbas asked me if I could teach the HANA track at the CodeJam event in Buenos Aires scheduled for December 4th and 5th 2013.

Gladly accepted the challenge as it meant for me a chance to teach my favorite topic SAP HANA, and to share some recent project experiences working with customers who were able to achieve impressive speed gains.

The CodeJam event took place at the downtown Buenos Aires office of Deloitte Argentina.

Deloitte in Argentina

Deloitte is the first international professional services organization in Argentina, established in 1908.  Provides services to major local companies and subsidiaries of multinationals operating in Argentina.  Maintains a leading position in important segments of the paper, agriculture, electric generation and distribution, oil and gas, automotive, petrochemical, tire, dairy, health care, media, telecommunications and financial services industries. Deloitte also serves a large number of government entities.  Has offices in Buenos Aires, Córdoba, Mendoza, and Rosario and representatives in Bahía Blanca, Neuquén, Rafaela, Resistencia, Salta, Santa Fe and Tucumán.  Deloitte Argentina has more than 2,000 professionals.  It's SAP Consulting practice has successfully delivered more than 60 SAP implementation projects, offering a wide range of solutions including HANA and Mobile technologies.

SAP CodeJam

SAP CodeJam is free for participants, events are organized several times a year in different awesome locations around the world.  It is mainly for developers who want to get introduced to the latest SAP Technologies, have a chance to practice with the SAP Development Tools for several hours and also connect with other professionals in a fun and friendly atmosphere.

I provided a general introduction to SAP HANA augmented with real life examples from recent experiences working with customers on HANA projects.

Then we had a delicious lunch featuring "milanesas" with various toppings, salads and desert.

After the lunch break, we started the hands on practice focusing on HANA Modelling and SQLScript programming.

SAP Developer Center

Within the SAP Community Network, we have the SAP Developer Center  with lots of good content specially prepared for developers, in particular under the SAP HANA heading there are excellent resources for getting started, obtaining tools, Cloud computing resources, training opportunities at the SAP HANA Academy, and collaboration through the SAP Community Network forums.  In particular, with regards to obtaining a HANA system from a public cloud provider, there are two options offered, one through Amazon Web Services (AWS) and another one free trial for 30-days from CloudShare.  Please see SAP HANA Developer Center

For the CodeJam we provided access to a HANA system hosted on Amazon free of charge, where each participant had a private space to work on and practice the exercises, using HANA Studio installed on her/his own laptop.

I demonstrated how to import data into HANA.

The rest of the afternoon was an intense session focusing on creating Analytical content using the HANA Studio Modeler tool.  The practice consisted of creating an Attribute View, an Analytical View, a Calculation View and a couple of SQLScript Procedures.

I am happy to report, the session was a success, participants were able to complete the work by the end of the day, some were a bit more comfortable with the material and had time to explore additional examples.

We had interesting and lively discussions towards the end talking about how HANA changes the game and offers unique opportunities for developers, system administrators and consultants.

Overall, I was quite pleased with the level of enthusiasm we were able to generate as a group around SAP HANA.

I would like to thank the organizers from SAP, Deloitte and Gloobal organizing, promoting and hosting the event.

At the end of the day I provided more insight based on recent customer engagement projects and how we added high value by using HANA.

We ended the session with references to the HANA documentation under SAP HANA – SAP Help Portal Page and other useful links.

On this CodeJam we also had Gloobal presenting on the second day advanced HANA topics including development on the XS Engine.

Our colleague, Claudia Pacheco from SAP Toronto ran the SAP Mobile track.
