SAP BusinessObjects Business Intelligence Suite 4.1 SP02 (SP2) Released

Good Morning All!

SAP has released today, as planned in the Maintenance Schedule, SAP BI 4.1 SP02.

Update 25/11/2013: Great news!  SAP has added today all of the SAP BI 4.1 Analytics tools with SP02 as a full installation.

Here are some helpful documentations:

  • What’s new in SAP BI 4.1 SP02

The much awaited Grouping Values!

“In a table in a Web Intelligence report, you can collect the values of a dimension into aggregated groups. A variable object for this aggregated group is created in the Available Objects tab on the Side Panel and allows you to manage the group configuration.”

Update: Thanks to WILLIAM MARCY who has insights on some extra undocumented features!  See his post here.

  • SAP BusinessObjects BI Suite 4.1 SP02 Release Restrictions (Known Issues):

  • SAP BusinessObjects BI Platform 4.1 SP02 Fixed Issues:

  • SAP BusinessObjects BI Platform 4.1 SP02 Upgrade Guide:

From the document: “You can install the 4.1 SP1 or 4.1 SP2 update directly on a BI platform 4.0 installation. You do not need to install the 4.1 update first”

Update 06/12/2013: The SBOP Forward Fit Plan now provides the list of fixes included from previous updates in SAP BI 4.1 SP02:

  • SAP BusinessObjects BI Platform 4.1 SP02 Install Guide:

There are some important information here:

      • Windows Server 2012 R2: Supported
      • Windows 8.1: Supported
      • Internet Explorer 11: Not Supported – In a later SP
      • Support for JRE6 is deprecated as of December 31, 2013
      • Still no support of SQL Server 2012 SP1…

I’ll be installing this update on my test VM straight away, hopefully it will all go well!

I’d be happy to hear your experiences with this update.

Thanks and good luck!

Does the SP2 contain any fixes for the RESTful SDK? In the fixed issues document is nothing mentioned, but thats something I can't imagine.

      Hi Jan,

Indeed nothing on it. But you've a chapter about REST in "What's new"

      http://help.sap.com/businessobject/product_guides/sbo41/en/sbo41_whats_new_en.pdf

      The following features are supported:

      • Retrieving a list of universes, universe metadata, business views, query capabilities, link groups of a universe

      • Creating a query, get the details of a query, get the list of queries, delete a query

      • Get the OData flow metadata, get the OData flow content (query results)

      We'll see testing it.

      Hi William,

I actually didn't add the link because if you go to the location you mentioned, the last update is Sept 9th, 2013.

      Do you have another link?

      Hi,

I actually found the link on SCN: http://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/scn/go/portal/prtroot/docs/library/uuid/507d3365-009b-3010-04b0-e5abc8f00c91?QuickLink=index&overridelayout=true&58879706670402

Strange that the PAM link on the SAP Support Portal doesn't have the latest one?!

      I'll update my article above.

      Hi,

Basically all you have to do is download the update and apply it on top of your current implementation.

All best practices apply of course.  Backup, do in Test environment before Prod, etc etc

I have also listed links about SAP documentation above.

Lots of articles about that here on SCN.

      Thanks,

      Hi Patrick

have you installed the new fixpack for sp2 yet?

There seem to be 2 files available to download from SAP, but I don't understand the difference in them.

They both seem to be updates for sp2, and they both became available within 1 day of each other. They are different file sizes though 🙁

      Prasad,

Is it mandatory, do we need install all the patches sequential ? for example, we have BO 4.1SP2 and can we apply directly patch 2 by skipping patch1 ?

Hi, the patches are cumulative, so you do not need to install patch 1 AND patch 2, you can just install patch 2

      Author's profile photo Former Member

      You can apply patch2 directly.

      Hi Patrick,

      I have recently upgraded to BO 4.1 SP02 from BO 4.0 SP04 on windows 2008 R2.

After the upgrade the DB backups (SQL) backups have almost doubled in Size (T-LOG  BACKUPS SIZE) and increasing day by day.

      4th week T-log backups =~7GB     (per day =~1.2GB)

      3rd week T-log backups =~5.5GB  (per day =~1.1 GB)

      2nd week T-log backups =~4.5GB

      1st week T-log backups =~3GB

Please suggest what action needs to be taken to decrease it .

      Amit,

The BI 4.x Platform is ONLY support on 64bit SERVER OS.  Win 8.1 is NOT Server OS, it's a desktop OS.

      Hello,

We have an old server running BO 4.0 and we are planning to have a new server to create a fresh install of BO 4.1.. But I just noted that 4.1 uses Sybase as default DB.. There is no way to change that and keep using MS Sql Server instead?

Or at least there is a driver to connect to the SQL Anywhere DB using the MS Management Studio?

      Thanks!

I recently upgraded from 4.0 to 4.1 SP02 with MS Sql Server. And the system is running just fine.

      Hello Devendra,

If you upgrade from 4.0 to 4.1 the system keeps running on MS SQL Server? I got that right?

In terms of going from 4.0 to 4.1, it will indee the same configuration you have.

If you do a fresh install, the new SysDB will be Sybase Anywhere now.

Personally, I've had so much issues "upgrading" that I much prefer doing a fresh install and a clean migration.  Success rate doing it this way: 100% so far.  It does take a bit more time though...

      Hi Patrick

I agree, 4.0 to 4.1 is not a smooth ride.

Having said that, I'm doing an upgrade from 4.1 SP2 to 4.1 SP3, and apart from it taking 150 minutes per node, it has been very smooth.

It depends whether you chose the option to swap-in the Sybase CMS or not when doing the upgrade - see BI4 How To: BI4.0 Patch to BI4.1 SP01+ and adding new features

Does upgrading from BO 4.0 to BO 4.1 need a different license?

No need a diferent license. It is considered as minor version update.
