To reach 1 mln of technology-familiar students seems to be relatively easy when the technology is as hot and self-promoting as SAP HANA. Open lectures, Jams, online courses, fat with materials SAP HANA Academy and the whole set of other interactive formats and events help much to boost the promotion campaign and bring good participation numbers. Time to stop creating and simply execute? Mmmm… Nope.
SAP University Alliances CIS decided to make one step forward and take the momentum to squeeze some very practical value for SAP HANA business.
What're the best student qualities constant thru all generations? Fearlessness to dream plus if-questioning. The best soil to grow innovative points of view... How to make this potential work? Provide the challenge that «lets the thought fly». And we managed to do this in partnership with the biggest Russian case championship for future IT-specs and engineers – Changellenge >> Cup Technical 2013.
With the great hand of Changellenge professionals we created the technological case with ambitious title – «SAP HANA. Big opportunities for Big Data». The case covered 3 main parts:
§ SAP overview, business philosophy, company strategic focus;
§ Big Data trends and «whys», existing analytic approaches;
§ and, of course, revolutionary SAP HANA.
We made our best to describe SAP HANA capacities and databases, «in-memory» advantage and hardware/software architecture. To gain more understanding we added description of the most capturing attention Big Data / SAP HANA implementations – NBA, the latest US president campaign, finger prints processing for UK criminalistics. To bring local flavor we introduced SAP HANA triumphs on the Russian market – the largest retail X5 Retail Group, the rail monopolist Russian Rail Roads and the oil&gas miner Surgutneftegaz.
The question we asked: «Where else could SAP HANA find its employment (business, public, political or other spheres)? Define how it could look like technically.»
Over 500 young and daring read the case to make own conclusion about SAP HANA platform perspectives. 39 teams of 4 persons each presented the solution to SAP HANA usage areas and models. Medicine, traffic, banking, video-monitoring and the list of examined topics can be continued. 15 best ones were carefully evaluated by local SAP HANA experts to (guess what?) find the new business standpoint(!). Awesome, isn't it?

Case from SAP company was rather knowledgeable and entertaining. For instance, previously we poorly understood what Big Data is and had the impression Oracle is much ahead in this area. Now we feel SAP with SAP HANA technology is a very serious player. And while we tried to solve the case we were amazed how vast SAP HANA usability approach could be.

When we hear about SAP we immediately think about business processes, high-tech integrations, consulting and business-analytics which lead to cooperation with large companies in Russia as well as abroad. We were inspired by the detailed research how Rosneft benefited from SAP-system integration.
SAP case brought a good piece of new knowledge and, what's more important, pushed our thinking in the right new way. In our solution we proved SAP HANA for medical sphere to get and analyze all the information about the patient fast and easy. SAP case at Cup Technical 2013 was great. It provided much space to fantasize how to utilize the proposed technology. I got acquainted with SAP HANA capabilities for big data and, probably, I'll be able to try the technology for the business I'm currently involved in.

SAP is associated with large business and big money, with solutions that help corporations to work effectively. There's already a year of our internship in the company integrating SAP products. That's why the topic is really hot for us.
Overall, participation in case championship is more broadening of interests. Every case brings new knowledge and SAP-case wasn't the exception. To learn Big Data trends and SAP HANA horizons was advantageous though the most curious part for us was to understand SAP internal strategy.
