The Process Integration scenarios are considered as downtime critical. Therefore the downtime minimization for SAP Process Integration has been in focus of the business continuity roadmap since beginning of the SAP initiative. In this blog, I want to answer the questions about the activities of near-Zero Downtime maintenance for dual-stack and Java stack,especially of SAP Process Orchestration.

What is realized so far?

Since SL Toolset SP7 the near-Zero Downtime Maintenance tool for SAP NW PI has been general available in the SL toolset.

It is a special tool to minimize the downtime when implementing SPS for the SAP NetWeaver Process Integration dual-stack. Some customers use it regularly and a business downtime reduction of 30 – 60 minutes is feasible.

The existing downtime minimization capability in the Software Update Manager (SUM) has been used to reduce the downtime of the dual-stack PI for Upgrades to PI 7.31. Since SL Toolset SP8 the nZDM feature in SUM is available for SAP PI (dual-stack) on request.

We analyzed the benefit internally and on customer side as well. Considering the downtime reduction you can expect a technical owntime reduction of 10 -30 minutes.

However the dual stack is running out, the recommended product is SAP Process Orchestration on Java stack only.

The Software Lifecycle follows the startegy and the nZDM for PI dual stack is in maintenance mode. This means we don’t invest in further activities but focus on the downtime reduction of updates and upgrades for SAP Process Orchestration.

What is planned regarding the Java platform SAP NetWeaver Process Orchestration?

The nZDM for SAP Process Orchestration is based on the nZDM tool for SAP Enterprise Portal was shipped in the SL Toolset until March 2014. With SL Toolset SP10 it is renamed and extended to an nZDM tool for SAP NetWeaver Java (nZDM Java). It is THE downtime minimization tool for the Java stack in general and it covers in general all maintenance activities (patches, SPs, EHP and upgrades).

How does it work?

nZDM Java is a clone based tool to minimize the planned downtime. It is a proven technology as it is already successfully used by customers to implement SPS for SAP NetWeaver portal. The offered switch system approach has been extended and a databse switch approach is also offered. The nZDM Java  ensures the data consistency between the productive system (source) and the cloned upgrade system (target) with help of a record and replication technology. This technology considers the high database load of a process orchestration system explicitely.

The nZDM Java ensures a continous message flow also during maintenance and only a downtime of app. 30 minutes has to be considered for the final steps after the execution of the Software Update Manager (SUM).

nZDM for for SAP NW Java supports SAP Process Orchestration for patches, SPS implementation, EHP and Upgrades for

  • SAP NetWeaver 7.3, SP7 or higher
  • SAP NetWeaver 7.3 EHP 1, SP2 or higher
  • SAP NetWeaver 7.4

Planning:

It is scheduled to extend the supported Databases for SAP ASE, SAP HANA in the next months.

        Hi Adi,

        as already answered in an email conversation in our tools we consider planned downtime only.

        But in general it is appreciated to join the initiative.
