Some of you know that my focus area right now is SAP NetWeaver BW based on SAP HANA and the integration of SAP BusinessObjects BI 4.x with SAP NetWeaver BW on SAP HANA.

In the beginning of the year my colleague Rohit Kamath and myself did spend several weeks in India to conduct training sessions with our partners. The workshop was split into two days – 1 day for BW on HANA and 1 day for BI with BW on HANA.

At the end of the workshops, we always got the same question: “Can we use the labs environment beyond the workshop” ? and we always had to say “No” because we already had the next workshop the next day.

It became obvious, that the hardware and the installation of the software was not a small hurdle for some of our partners, and even for some of our customers.

We were using Amazon EC2 hosted environments as part of the workshop, so the idea was born to simply leverage Amazon hosted environments and “somehow” to make them available to our customers and partners in form of a trial license, so that they could leverage the pre-configured systems to see what the capabilities are from SAP BW on SAP HANA in combination with SAP BusinessObjects BI.

And here we are several months later and we are now able to deliver such systems to our partners and customers.

Starting now you can navigate to the SAP HANA Marketplace, select the product offering – SAP BW powered by SAP HANA – and you can leverage two prepared Amazon images and move these images into your own Amazon AWS account.

In other words, you can have a complete landscape with SAP NetWeaver BW 7.3 on SAP HANA SP06 with SAP BusinessObjects BI 4.0 SP07 up and running in just a few minutes.

So what do you receive ?

  • You will get a completely configured SAP NetWeaver BW 7.3 on SAP HANA (SP06) system
  • You will get a SAP BusinessObjects BI 4 SP07 Server and Client system
  • Your SAP BusinessObjects BI system is already fully configured to connect to the SAP NetWeaver BW on SAP HANA system
  • You will receive a 300+ pages PDF document with tutorials and scenarios highlighting the capabilities of SAP NetWeaver BW on SAP HANA and SAP BusinessObjects BI in combination with SAP NetWeaver BW on SAP HANA
  • The software is a 30 day trial (non-production usage)
  • The cost is less than 6 USD per hour for the Amazon AWS systems

and all of this is FREE, with the exception that you pay Amazon AWS for the usage of their systems.

So you receive two completely configured systems as Amazon AWS hosted environments and these systems will be running using your Amazon AWS account.

The benefit of using your very own account is, that you have full control about the costs as you can start, stop, suspend or terminate the system whenever you would like. So in case you just need the system for a few hours – you can start the system and stop the system exactly when you need it.

Start by creating your own Amazon AWS account (in case yo don’t have it already) – http://aws.amazon.com/ – and then use the link to our new trial offer on SAP HANA Marketplace to get your very own SAP NetWeaver BW on SAP HANA with SAP BusinessObjects BI landscape.

    Hi Ingo,

It’s really a cool idea to deliver the HANA plug and play images for those who really want to get the feel and touch 🙂

    Regards,

    Avinash

    Thanks Ingo,

Great !!! We can easily try & demo BW on HANA/BI4 solutions in less than 1 hour setup using AWS cloud images… Hope SAP will extend this kind of demos images to other SAP solutions !

    Best Regards,

    Olivier

Thanks a lot Ingo. This is amazing.

Quick note to say that I’ve had some issues when configuring with Firefox but with IE it worked just fine.

Apart from that, this is really impressive and very well done. It’s the best way to quickly demonstrate the power of HANA.  Thanks again.

Hi,  Thanks for sharing this info.

You have mentioned that the software is a 30 day trial (non-production usage). What would be the software cost after the trial period for non-produciton usage. Please let me know.

    Thanks,

    Mani.

      Hello Mani,

you will have to talk to your SAP Account manager about the pricing for the products that you required and the amount of users.

      regards

At our university this is something we would really want our students to use. Any thoughts on how this could work for us in a classroom setting, or is this strictly individual offering.

I’m thinking about signing up just for myself to learn these systems.

    Thanks,

    Ryan

    Wonderful. Thank You Ingo!

Can this environment be connected to ES1?

This way partners can prototype solutions of ERP data/table extraction into either this BW on HANA platform, or the SAP HANA Cloud Platform.

    Is this possible?

    Best regards,
    Eric

      Hello Eric,

not sure which system you are referring to with ES1 but basically you are receiving your own instances of BW on HANA and BI4 and you also control which ports are opened up as you can change the configuration on the ports.

      regards

    Thanks, Ingo.

Have seen you every year in either conferences or SAP insight events.  I remember your comment on starting up the quick BW-on-HANA, when you and Rohit were in Chicago this year.

now with this system, we have an extension of those events….and your presence…

All we need now is to toss away the 300 plus pages, instead putting a virtual Ingo and Rohit in there….

    Thanks Ingo,

very good and just what I was looking for!

I started with the first few scenarios in BW and everything worked properly.

Then I wanted to use BO Analysis Office edition and downloaded / installed it successfully from SAP on my notebook.

Unfortunately the following problem with the URL of the Web-Service occurred.

„Fehler bei der Prüfung der Verfügbarkeit von SAP BusinessObjects Business Intelligence“ (error when checking availability of SAP BO Business Intelligence)

I entered the following input as indicated in the user manual in the respective field but the “OK” button for proceeding with the next actions always stays inactive (greyed out).

    http://XX.XXX.XXX.XXX:8080/dswsbobj/services/session

where xx.xxx.xxx.xxx is the IP of the BI4 server

    Any ideas?

    • Do I need a license key on client side (you know like for temporary use of SAP BO Analysis)?
    • Do I have to start something in advance on the server side (e.g. BI Launchpad)

    Thanks for a quick hint

    regards christoph

by default specific ports are blocked but you can change the configuration if you would like to do so.

      – Navigate to the SAP Cloud Appliance Library

      – Click on the instance

      – Navigate to the tab Virtual Machine

There you should see the ports and if you would like to do so you can change the configuration.

    Thanks Ingo,

We are really keen to try this out. Just to confirm, would we be able to “copy” our own BW data to the test system in order to get “real figures” re the data compression and performance on HANA, based on our OWN data, not test data?

Also, we use BPC 7.5 currently and know that we need to upgrade to BPC 10, should be migration BW to HANA. Could you not extend the test environment to include BPC 10 as well?

    Regards,

    Caroline

      Hello Caroline,

the BW on HANA system is using a 128 GB RAM environment so that gives you a maximum of 64 GB of data.

Yes you can bring in your own data using flat files, transports, or hooking it up to products like Data Services.

In case you are looking to do that you will have to open more ports of the systems which can be done on the configuration screen.

The system does not include BPC at this point.

        Hi,

Can you please confirm how secure the system is? Naturally clients are usually concerned when their data leaves their network?

        cheers,

          Hello,

on the BW and the BI4 side you have full admin rights and you can configure it to your needs.

On the Amazon side itself only very few ports are open and you do have the ability to either open it up more or configure it even more restricted.

Basically you do have full control on those systems.

In regards to data, it does come with sample data and if you would like, you can upload your own data as well.

          hope this helps

          regards
