Still alive after week 2: Enterprise Mobility Enablement Services

Good news first: I passed the homework assigned of week 1: 30 pts , max score (and what a relief). It took me 10 minutes for the test,  and still scoring 30 out of 30 points is a good motivation for the weeks to come.

Right now, the assignment counter for week shows that there is still time left for submitting the homework for week 2.

I already submitted my answers for week 2 during the weekend and while I hope to keep my current score, I’d be surprised I’ll continue so. Too much going on right now, but as stated earlier, the goal is to learn, not to pass with a perfect score.

How was week 2

Week 2 was theory only. The topic was security and what SMP cloud version offers in that regard. An easy going week, no hands on, explaining mainly the reasons why to go for security and that SMP – of course – offers all you need to solve your security related concerns. Felt a little bit like SAP marketing presentation.

I missed more detailed information on the main reasons for security, the current challenges and the role of MDM and governance. While data at rest was part of the content, how to crypt data on a mobile was not really touched. How to evaluate a mobile platform for security aspects wasn’t shown, the impact of consumer devices in a corporate environment not detailed. Also, BYOD and security concerns that come with outdated versions, cloud services or jail-braked versions were not really covered.

Analyzing mobile applications with SMP was the last part of the course. Again: pure theory. It is really nice to see that the visual presentation of this important functionality is handled ootb by SMP. Some information on what and where to log information wasn’t part of the exercise. Or: how to get the locally logged information from the device to SMP to analyze it there?

Looking at the discussion area of the course, some people were not happy with the all theory approach, but in week 3 this will change. The foundation for authentication and security is laid and as I am already in week 3, user on-boarding is week 2 applied in practice.

    • Less than I thought. I download the videos on the weekend and watch them during commute. As it's Rio, I have 1h in the morning and 1h in the evening. The actual hands-on sessions are 2 to 3hs per week. But that heavily depends if I have to set up the environment first or not.

All in all it's not much effort to attend the course.

  • Hi all,

I installed all the tools by recommended  installation order but after installing all the tools, while i start eclipse i am not able to see SDK Manager in it.

please help me to solve this problem.

  • Hi, i downloaded the example "W1U5_MyFirstIntegratedWebApp" from week-1 downloads section. while i tried to execute the example it's not producing any output.

can anyone tell me what can be the problem? what should i do?

          • I assume you have already installed Android ADT plugin in eclipse Juno . If so, please try opening the Android SDK directly to check if it is working . (or) check if this thread can help you. (Sometimes the option is to be enabled ) .

and to the other question , "HTTP request failed" , Are you running in the "W1U5_MyFirstIntegratedWebApp" ? The screenshot appears to be of "W1U5_MyFirstIntegratedHWCApp " .

For web app try disabling the chrome security and check the logs for issues .

Also i would suggest to have a look at the discussions section in week -1 .

          • yes sorry the dialog is for "W1U5_MyFirstIntegratedHWCApp", what can be the solution for that?

and For "W1U5_MyFirstIntegratedWebApp" i already disabled web security but have no luck, its not producing any result.

          • Please look into the discussions of the week -1 with  " http request failed " in search box . I don't have an access now , but do remember some changes to be  made in the code when calling the OData url endpoint ,depending of the android versions.

          • Hi Virinchy P i taken look at discussion form, but there i didn't found any solution, now the problem is that the app "W1U5_MyFirstIntegratedHWCApp" is executing successfully on emulator but its giving same error " HTTP request failed" while executing on real device(HTC One X). Can you please help me for it?? it will be great help.

          • Rajesh, which version of android is HTC one X and emulator ? There are few changes for versions above 4.1.2 which are mentioned in the discussions.

          • Hi Rajesh,

The easiest is to simply click on the Create dropdown at the top right (directly below Communications) and Create a Discussion.  I would also strongly urge you to read the Getting Started link (also top right) documents which will tell you how to get the most out of SCN.  There are several reasons to create a Discussion.  First, others will have difficulty finding your solution in the comments of a document whereas it is pretty easy to find in a Discussion.  Second, many of the experts tend to ignore comments on Documents/Blogs so you will get more and sometimes better responses as a Discussion.  Third, there is no way to reward those who helped you in Comments.  As a Discussion you can set good responses as Helpful Answer (worth 5 points) or Correct Answer (worth 10 points but also let people know which response has the solution you used).
