ESP SP03 is now available

ESP 5.1 SP03 is now available. The two main features of this release are:

1. The new ESP Adapter Toolkit

This toolkit is designed to make it easier to build new ESP adapters.  When support for a new transport protocol or message type is needed, rather than write an entire adapter, users can simply write a “transport module” and/or a “formatting module” in Java, and then use the adapter toolkit to combing a transporter, a formatter and ESP connectors into a  complete adapter.  The toolkit takes care of threading, scaling, management, etc.

Also, along with the toolkit, we ESP includes a number of standard transport and format modules that can be combined to form adapters. These replace the existing file, JMS and socket adapters and the list has been expanded to include support for JSON, FTP and configurable XML parsing.

The toolkit is documented in the new “Building Custom Adapters” guide that is now part of the ESP doc set. For the adapter capabilities including the eagerly awaited support for JSON and flexible XML parsing, see the ESP Adapters Guide

2. ESP plug-in for SAP HANA Studio

All of the ESP Studio capabilities are now available in a 2nd form:  the ESP plug-in for SAP HANA Studio.  HANA Studio users can install this plug-in to add two new ESP perspectives to HANA Studio.  The ESP Authoring and ESP Run/Test perspectives provide all the capabilities of the stand-alone ESP Studio, but within the context of the HANA Studio.  Not only does the eliminate the need to run a second application to configure ESP, but it lays the foundation for the ESP Authoring tools to more directly interact with the HANA tools in the future.  To install the ESP plug-in for SAP HANA Studio, first you must have HANA Studio installed.  Then install ESP.  Finally,  follow the ESP post-installations instructions for installing the plug-in.

ESP Welcome screen and tutorials

Also,  the old ESP Studio “Learning Perspective” has been replaced by a standard Eclipse-style welcome page and Eclipse-style “cheat sheet” tutorials.  The new Welcome Page links to online resources including our growing collection of ESP video tutorials.
