Russian Railways Move Faster Down the Tracks, and Behind-the-Scenes

There is nothing worse for customers than waiting. As our attention spans continue to diminish with the need for constant stimulation and activity, waiting for 60 seconds can seem like 60 minutes.

In the transportation and logistics industry, being on time and avoiding the unexpected wait is key to customer satisfaction and happy commuters. The Russian Railway, the largest transportation service provider in Russia, carries over one billion passengers and 1.4 billion tons of freight across 11 time zones each year. For them, timing is everything and keeping those one billion passengers moving smoothly is a priority.

For the Russian Railways, they sought to increase their efficacy and success by optimizing their SAP NetWeaver Business Warehouse application by running the SAP HANA database as the power behind the operation. The Russian Railways wanted to gain practical insights and knowledge using the latest and most innovative technology.

By enlisting the SAP ActiveEmbedded services team to help deploy and support the implementation of SAP NetWeaver Business Warehouse, the SAP HANA appliance software could run faster and improve core analytical applications.

Vadim Moskalenko, Deputy CIO of Russian Railways recognized that SAP services helped make the process successful and stated that, “We are very satisfied with the premium level of support we are getting from the team.”

In addition, the Russian Railways leveraged SAP Rapid Prototyping services to ensure the deployment was safe and non disruptive.

From the deployment, Russian Railways has experienced these key benefits:

  • Real-time analysis and reporting for smarter, fast decision making
  • Planning cycle reduced from 14.5 hours to 23 minutes
  • Accurate, detailed, and granular financial cost reporting and analysis
  • Lower total cost of ownership

Overall, the Russian Railways is able to keep things moving quicker with 40 times faster function distribution, five times faster reporting, and three times less data volume in the data warehouse.
