With the introduction of HANA we are on the cusp of a generational change in technology within the SAP landscape. The last time this happened we went from one productive landscape of R/3 to multiple landscapes – ECC, CRM, BW, etc. This led to a dramatic increase in operational costs. In response to this SAP introduced Solution Manager and the associated ALM processes in order to help reduce the cost of support. Although the promise of HANA is to reduce certain costs (SAN, servers, etc), there are still many additional areas that need addressing to ensure HANA is enterprise ready.

The early lessons from the introduction of HANA into the SAP landscape are:

  • May require multiple appliances for PRD (BW)
  • High Availability and Disaster Recovery = 2 x PRD appliances
  • Still require shared storage to scale out
  • Data archiving and Near line storage are recommended to help reduce memory size
  • Patch, patch and patch again
  • RCA frequently used for trouble shooting

Currently the business benefits are supporting the additional hardware costs of migrating (or using a sidecar approach) to HANA. What is not clear is the potential for an increase in operational costs due to supporting HANA. In order to mitigate this risk it makes sense to re-visit your ALM strategy to ensure you have the processes and systems in place to ensure the disruption from HANA is minimized.

Solution Manager Maintenance:

As we approach the second half of 2013 it is a good time to review your SAP maintenance schedule to check that you have anticipated any changing business requirements, such as the introduction of HANA, that require system patches/upgrades. As part of preparing for this activity you will need to review your ALM roadmap to ensure Solution Manager is up to date. Also, if you are currently on Solman 7.0 or below, you may need to start planning for an upgrade to 7.1 to ensure continued maintenance support. A good way to start is by booking your Basis team onto the following EGI – Technical Upgrade of SAP Solution Manager to 7.1 – 12th to 16th August.

  • Solman 7.0 Mainstream Maintenance ends Q4 2013 (7.1 will be supported for 6 years)

    • Integration of eProjects

    • EHP Scope and Effort Analyzer
    • TAO for CRM
