Last week we conducted an amazing partner test event (June 11-13) in Walldorf, Germany. Why amazing? First, I was pleased to see the registration list we had when the event was published. We managed to host 28 partners from various companies representing different business areas.

Day 1 –

The journey started on a rainy day with a welcome session, then presenting the SAP Portal portfolio roadmap and right away we kicked off an introduction session to cloud portal scenarios with live demos.

In the first test scenario the partners learned to develop cloud-based business and social applications for use in engaging portal sites. The exercise included the work environment setup, learning how to create OpenSocial widgets, adding the widgets to Cloud Portal, creating the site layout and publishing the site.

The target site designed for the partners was a “marketing site” scenario that promotes a new product delivered by a company named Atomic. The site included 3 pages:

 

Home page: included several text widgets, RSS feed for news, automatic and manual slide-show widget of images and social links embedded in a widget acting as the page “footer”.

Contact Us page: an interactive Form widget, connected to SAP on-premise CRM backend system (using Cloud Connector and Gateway) simulating “web-to-lead” scenario. Details entered to the form are persisted in the backend Leads table.

About page: included widgets using OpenSocial pub/sub capabilities to enable data exchange. Clicking on a specific branch displays branch location on a Google map.

Day 2 –

The next day started with an additional hands-on session, this time the partners learned how to add new widgets to their portal site, define cloud portal users, create and author a site, configure a site using advanced authoring features and eventually enhance the site layout and theme using the standard cloud portal CSS file.

During this exercise the partners got the chance to experience the latest layout features that were introduced a couple of days prior to the event. In fact, we deliver new capabilities and enhancements every two weeks so our customers and partners (including trial users) can enjoy the latest and greatest without waiting for service packs releases as we know from the on-premise world. Worth to mention that all the hands-on sessions were conducted using the HANA Cloud Portal free trial.

Here are some of the new site layout settings introduced to the partners:

 

  • Site author can show or hide the site width and grid lines
  • Define a fix width for a site. The default site width is 1024 pixels; it can be set between 800 and 1440 pixels.
  • Reduce the minimum space between widgets up to 0 pixels for all pages in the site. Vertical spacing between widgets can be
    controlled per page.

Day 3 –

On the last day we ended up with a lot of sun and a warm weather, discussing directions for growing a business with the Cloud Portal. We had a fancy lunch at the Customer Restaurant 🙂 and concluded with a successful feedback session presented to the Cloud Portal management team.
