Blog It Forward – Kannan Ramaswamy

If you are one like me, waiting to start blogging in SCN then this is for you. Blog It Forward Challenge by xMoshe Naveh (Old Acct). I was BIFed by Jason Cao in his BIF Blog. If you want me to Blog It Forward to you please comment below. Also update the Blog It Forward Chain once you post your BIF blog.

My name is Kannan Ramaswamy. I used to play lot of video games as a kid. Like most of you gamers, I had a childhood dream of becoming a game developer(I really don’t know what that position is). Then I choose to graduate as a Computer Science Engineer which I thought is closely related to programming which in turn is related to writing games. I am a data warehouse developer now. I like SCN with this new mission, badges and reputation system. I love the idea of gamification, after all we still are kids from inside.

Taj Mahal, Agra, India – One of the seven wonders

A fun fact about my country:

India has the second largest population in the world, its culturally rich and diverese. There are 18 officials languages and 1,652 dialects and spoken languages so if you cross 400-500 miles you enter another state probably with a new language. One quarter of the worlds work force is from India. India

got its name from the  Indus River, which is where earliest settlers made their homes. The Indus valley is one of the world’s earliest urban civilizations.

  • What is your favorite place in the world?

          Surfers paradise, Australia

  • What do you foresee as the future of your field of expertise?

The A.I. behind decision support system will drastically increase, and they will learn on the fly about their environment and propose/make decision instead of simply sharing information to managers.

  • What inspires you?

Science, Technology and all that which comes out of it inspires me.

  • What have you accomplished recently that you’re really proud of?

I am proud that I got to work on a SAP BW project for one of the world leading footware manufacturer.

  • If you could be a superhero, who would you be?

I want to be like batman, superman or spiderman. Just a normal to people who know me, and a hero under mask to all πŸ™‚

Questions for others:

  • What sports you like?
  • Tell about any weird game that you came across, player or invented?
  • What is your favourite game, and which game character you want to be?

      Hi Kannan,

Good to see your BIF. Seems to be BIF is giving us an opportunity to know each other in SCN. Frankly, we never came across in any of our posts/threads. But, your BIF made me know about one person in SCN.

All the best for your new project. I hope your dream comes to true soon as a video game developer.

      Regards, Sai Krishna.

      Hi Tammy,

Its nice to meet you too.

Abstract: What inspire me is the fact that both data and users have evolved, its time for the data warehouse developers to evolve and make a complete solution to provide information on the go.

When I was little the data around me was very limited. I mean the systems had around 10-40 GB HDD and business people carry their data on Floppy drives 1.44 MB hardly. And the processing power and users awareness towards manipulating the data were also restricted.

As I grew up there has been a tremendous change in this trend. Now 1,2 and 4 TB HDD are available for everyday use, the data doesn't sit around in the same place its highly connected, the processing power is way too high even in mobile devices and the user community has evolved I mean now my 6yr old niece is creating digital data in one form or the other.

So now being a data warehousing developer has given me a chance to gather all this data which are in different forms, from different devices and created by different users and then to sit back and think what I can do with all this data, and to explore if it is of any interest to someone, will it help to solve any problem? Once I start getting answers for this questions I think about how I can mould and model the data available to present it for the targeted audience in the most usable way.

Way to go, and good background and degree - games isn't quite like Data Warehousing, but I bet you are still a serious gamer. Keep powering forward - never know how your goals and your job might coalesce.
