Activating Batch management while creating a new material Issue
Today I tried to create a ‘New’ material with material type ‘ROH’ and after entering all information in MM01. When I tick ‘Batch Management Indicator’ in either purchasing or plant/storage view, I got ‘display errors’ which reads ‘Batch management may not be defined for value only materials’. 😕
I searched all over google and SCN and unable to find a solution. May be I missed somewhere.. 😡
After too much head breaking, I found that in OMS2 details for material type ROH in Quantity/Value updating subscreen, ‘By Valuation area’ were selected for both Quantity and value as shown in the screen shot…
but for my plant both quantity and value updates were checked for this material type. 😯
Finally after selecting radio Button ‘In all valuation areas’ for both Quantity and Value, I’m able to create a new material with Batch management active.. 😆
I never encountered an issue or use with the above setting… ℹ ➕
So I just thought of sharing with you all…
IF you found any other usage of this setting please share… 😘

Satish
Good job Mr. Satish , its really helpful.
Hi Satish,
By selecting in all valuation areas, the system will update movements in quantity identically in all existing valuation areas. this may not suffice in case the business wants to valuate the material differently with different valuation area.
Moreover in our client, the setting in OMS2 is By Valuation Area only. we are able to activate batch management at purchasing & Plant/storage view i during new material creation. i believe this may not be the root cause of the issue you faced.

Hi jammy singh,
Can you please tell your batch management is active at which level?
In my system it is active at material level.. So to activate batch in material master you need to select all valuation areas in value update...
Please tell your batch level Rahul Nayak
In our system batch management is activated at Plant level. we are valuating batches differently for different plants.
Hi,
So that is the my reason...if you are using batch level at plant, then if you select quantity and value updates for your valuation area/plant in material type, then that is enough...
But for batch at material level, you need to select all valuation areas for quantity and value update of material type...
Thanks &Regards
Satish

Mr.Satish ,
Thank you for sharing this valuable information ...
Can Batch management be applied for material type NOR ?
Rgds
UmaShankar
Hi UmaShankar,
If I got Your question correct then You meant to ask this. If i activate batch management for a material type, then all materials created or existing with that material type are activated with batch management or not.

Satish
If that is right its not possible
Hi Satish,
I believe this may not be the root cause of the issue you faced. In my system, batch management level is material, and the setting in OMS2 is By Valuation Area only.
I can create material within 'batch management' indicator,no error appears.
Dear Neil Huang,
Thank You very much for your feedback. That's may not be the root cause of issue. But by configuring that setting in OMS2, the error was resolved & I'm able to activate the batch management. But again if I make any changes to the Quantity & value updates then that error was not coming. So that may not be a root cause. But it has resolved my very peculiar issue. So wanted share that. It will be very helpful if anybody shares the root cause of the above issue.
Regards
Satish
Dear Satish,
If you only create one view, say Purchasing view, without entry any plant, does this error still come?
I assume this error is not from batch, it may from accounting view, valuation class .
Sorry add this comment so late.
Hi Ju Yang,
Thank you so much for your comments.
As batch management is activated in a material at plant level, then if you enter plant then only the check box for activating batch management will be displayed.
As said in the above document & also as mentioned in the discussion link given by Srini Ravindra Kumar, it was due to the Batch management is activated at material level and Quantity & Value updates were not check in some plants for that material type.

Satish
Satish, Check this thread.Batch Management cannot be activated
Dear Ravindra,
Thanks for the link to the discussion. Exactly the same solution was given in that link, which solved my issue in this document. But yet that time I was unable to find this discussion & solved by Myself. So thought interesting issue & shared the same solution in this document.
