On May 02, 2013 students of the private school had, as in the last couple of years, the opportunity to gain insight into the usage of SAP systems by using the online simulation game ERPsim. The game runs on the SAP application Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP), with which business processes can be controlled. Course instructor Juergen Pitz from SAP led the participants into the world of business and explained the functions of the program before the students could begin selling their products. Each group was in charge of a choice of cereals, in which selling price and production quantity itself had to be calculated.
"Normally, this simulation game is done within corporate training on the use of ERP," said Pitz, "but in the context of cooperation between the private school St. Leon-Rot and SAP, we can offer this simulation game to the students. This way they get a practical insight into working with SAP systems as well as into the work of producing industries. "The game plan was made available by SAP University Alliances (UA) which gives teachers and students all around the world access to the latest SAP technologies. A focus of the program includes the promotion of cooperation between educational institutions, industry partners and interested parties on the subject of how to use SAP software in teaching. The University Competence Center (UCC) assumes maintenance, operation and technical support of SAP solutions and acts as an application service provider.
In the course of the simulation, each player took a role within their team and was responsible for marketing, inventory or accounting. The assessment was done after every round, each corresponding to a trading quarter. The goal of each team was to show their highest profit after four quarters. At the end of the day, the winners were happy that they had best economized". I can well imagine working in the business area later", revealed one of the participants, "During the workshop we were able to see first-hand how a business works." The response from the participants was very positive: "At the beginning the application interface seemed cluttered and difficult to understand. But during the day, you could always work better with the system and use the functions optimally. "
