This blog describes the functionalities and limitations of different types of Chart Filters in Visual Intelligence v1.10.

The connection used here is Universe 4.x

4 ways in which we can filter are :

  1. Drag and drop Objects from Object Picker into Filter Box
  2. Use  Global Filter
  3. Double click on a Legend to do a quick filter of the selected legend in the chart
  4. Exclude or Filter by selecting from the chart directly

Here all the above are illustrated by using a Stacked Bar Chart.

I have used Universe 4.x connectivity, choosing E-Fashion Universe.

I have set a few Global Filters

  • Year = 2006
  • State = New York, Florida, Texas

Drag and drop Objects from Object Picker into Filter Box

This is basic filtering done on the chart. One can drag and drop an object from the object picker pane and analyze data.

Here I choose State Object

Note that, State is already set as a Global filter.

The selected items in the Global Filter are in Bold as shown above.

In case any other value is selected, here I have added Colorado and California, and the chart shows no data.

This is because the Global Filter is active so no other change will be identified.

In case we add New York with Colorado and California, then data for only New York comes up in the chart.

Use  Global Filter

You can choose whether or not you want Global Filters to be applied to a chart in SAP Visual Intelligence.

Check or uncheck the Use Global Filters check box

With Global Filters Checked:

With Global Filters Unchecked:

Double click on a Legend to do a quick filter of the items in the chart

When you double click a legend, that clicked item becomes the focus of the chart.

Here the chart has Quarter as the legend.

I have double clicked on Q1

Only Q1 is displayed and all the other quarters are excluded from the chart.

Also note that automatically the quarter is added to the Filter Pane.

To reset or add or remove more quarters, you have to select as you do for a basic filter.

Exclude or Filter by selecting from the chart directly

Here I can use Ctrl + Click and select those items I want to filter or exclude in a chart directly from the chart area.

Say I want to see only data for

Year = 2004, 2006

Quarter =Q1, Q3

Lines = Leather, Overcoats, Sweaters

I can either filter these directly from the chart or exclude all the other from the chart by a simple Ctrl +Click

All the filters applied to the chart appear in the filter pane on the left side.

All the modification can be undone using Ctrl + z.

The filters applied to the chart appear as its header which can be modified by double click.
