Well, now you can: With openSAP.

These are the introductory words to openSAP, the new online learning platform from SAP.

It pretty much speaks for itself: SAP is finally giving the leap frog in education it required to reach the massification of SAP knowledgeable developers it needed, specially for the innovation solutions (HANA and Mobility, to name a few).

They have also published a summary on the openHPI course on In-Memory Data Management, by Hasso Platner, which serves as a general introduction the concepts behind HANA.

While the first openSAP course, Introduction to Software Development on SAP HANA, is intended as an introductory class for software developers who are new to SAP HANA, it makes sense for course participants to obtain an understanding of the fundamental concepts of in-memory data management before the course starts. If you have taken the openHPI course on the topic that was delivered by Prof. Hasso Plattner in 2012, you will be good to go. If you have not attended this course or similar training programs on in-memory data management, we recommend that you use this summary of Prof. Plattner’s lectures as a warm-up exercise. The summary was prepared by Dr.-Ing. Jürgen Müller (HPI) and is exclusively available on openSAP.

Introduction to Software Development on SAP HANA

SAP HANA is an in-memory data platform that is deployable as an appliance or in the cloud. At its core, it is an innovative in-memory relational database management system that makes full sense of the capabilities of current hardware to increase application performance, to reduce cost of ownership, and to enable new scenarios and applications that were not possible before. With SAP HANA, you have the opportunity to build applications that integrate the business logic, control logic, and the database layer with unprecedented performance. As a developer, one of the key questions is how you can minimize data movements. The more you can do directly on the data in memory next to the CPUs, the better the application will perform. This course will introduce you to native software development on SAP HANA. Registration, learning content, and the final exam are free of charge. However, to fully benefit from the course, you can access a fee-based system environment to develop your own code. SAP works with several cloud providers to give you a choice of infrastructure platforms and attractive pricing models to enable system access at a very low cost.

This is definitely SAP going into the right direction.

And let's hope they truly leverage this new platform for other topics in the future, since that's what is really required for the "new SAP" the market demands.

They already have two planned additional courses: one in Design Thinking and another one for introduction to mobile applications development.

Some people have asked what is the difference between the new openSAP platform and other existing education initiatives, in particular the SAP HANA Academy videos in YouTube. Here are some key aspects:

• openSAP will include student assignments and provide a certification upon successfully reaching the required minimum rate in the assignments;
• SAP HANA Academy videos provide practical tips for actual technical requirements; openSAP, on the other hand, is all about reinforcing the basic concepts so that one understands what is truly behind it (though there are some practical assignments);
• openSAP plans include non-product related courses outside of the classical SAP training scope, including a Design Thinking course. Social Business was also mentioned as an area to be pursued;
• None of them replace an actual SAP Education certification, which is the sole proof one is professionally enabled for the particular topic.
