Ten Trends that will Impact your Mobile Strategy

Few would argue that over the past four or five years, mobility has changed the world. People live and communicate differently, at home and at work. Industry thought leader Bill Clark has identified the top ten trends that will impact companies as they build their enterprise mobility strategy.

Big Data – By the end of 2013, data volume will reach 4 Billion Terabytes. When big data meets analytics and in memory computing, system latencies decline to the point where relevant, context specific interactions take place through mobile devices in real time.

New Banking – In South Africa, 80% of the population is unbanked, a big hindrance to economic development. Banks are now using feature phones and basic texting functions to enable mobile banking for the larger population in emerging markets.

Everywhere Commerce – According to Google, 40% of searches come from mobile phones. 50% of consumers with smartphones do product research and price comparisons while standing in a physical store. How are retailers factoring this information in their mobility plans for employees and end-consumers?

Internet of Things – Analysts predict there will be 50 billion connected devices by 2020, everything from phones to cars to appliances to vending machines and industrial equipment. These devices are capturing and generating data that enables closer tracking of business processes and context-specific interactions between devices, businesses, and people. In a few years, IoT will become as ubiquitous as mobile devices are today.

Context Awareness – Context aware computing makes the mobile experience relevant. Context can be location awareness and environment, social context, user identity, and user intent. Context awareness enables greater automation, better time management, and more accurate business engagement.

Cloud – Cloud offers the scalability and agility required to enable Machine-to-Machine interaction and “Internet of Things”.

The Multi-Channel Norm – Multi-channel refers to an ecosystem dependent on many device types and form factors, and users interacting with them in many ways (such as voice, touch, and keying). It is also about applications tapping multiple data sources to perform actions.

Mobile Virtualization – Mobile people leave a trail of their digital lives, from financial information to social data to context information left behind when they interact with the internet of things. Their willingness to do this depends on protecting that information in trusted digital environments. Data protection will be the key to future viability of any mobile strategy.

Social – Mobile access to Facebook now exceeds desktop access. Social media has become a model of interaction in which people quantify themselves, their decisions and choices, influences, and intents. It is also a growing source of business intelligence, and increasingly it is a model for business engagement.

Immersive User Experience – Imagine your consumer watching an ad on TV, while interacting with the product on a tablet device and finally using smartphone to complete a purchase. It is critical to provide a seamless end-to-end user experience across all modes.
