The mobility world is experiencing unprecedented growth and innovation today. Mobile networks are faster, mobile devices are more powerful, user interfaces are slicker and applications are cooler today than they’ve ever been. This also means more of you are evaluating and launching new mobile projects./wp-content/uploads/2013/01/gearturning_169756.jpg

The following series of blog articles will offer the four critical capabilities we at SAP recommend you consider.  The recommendations are based on our experience with our customers worldwide where the applications range from Complex Apps to Productivity Apps to Consumer/B2B Apps.

#1 Critical Capability:  Deliver secure, scalable and reliable solutions

When processing 10,000+ transactions per day to working with thousands of complex records in real time, your mobile app needs to pull a lot of weight.  You will want technology engineered with high workloads and scalability in mind — so you can always count on your mobile solution to keep pace with your work.  You will also want to consider extreme solution flexibility and comprehensive feature sets to protect your data at the enterprise system level, over the air and on the device.

For instance high availability is critical for complex mobile apps such as for B2E (business-to-employee).  Because complex apps are deployed for mission critical business processes, they must always be available to keep work going. In addition to bullet-proofing the server-side architecture, this requirement is usually met by deploying the mobile app as a thick client, so all data and the application itself reside on the device. Thick client applications are less susceptible to network quality and availability, and are much safer as a choice for complex solutions.

As you move to productivity and consumer apps, the size of the user population increases dramatically, which drives the need for solution scalability at the application server, enterprise system and network performance levels.  Moreover the need for mobile device management tools to efficiently handle and troubleshoot thousands of devices and applications and an efficient model for app distribution and updates is important.

Now security and scalability is part of the picture.  The second critical capability we will discuss in the blog series is the ability to easily develop and configure applications.
