Employees operating in an evolving global marketplace, from top executives to purchasing agents, are constantly on the move. But while frequent business travel is nothing new, expectations for employees on the road have changed radically. Not so long ago, work came to a near standstill during travel. Today, smartphones and tablets allow (or force) traveling employees to stay connected 24/7.

That’s great news for your business, but a challenge as well – especially in the areas of governance, risk, and compliance (GRC). New mobile GRC apps – from high-level risk dashboards to tactical import and export compliance apps – support current work styles and help employees at all levels drive value at home or on the move.

Mobile Risk Management for Executive-Level Review

At SAP, the Executive Risk Committee works to mitigate project risks by reviewing the input of major stakeholders such as the CFO, COO, risk management, legal, and regional management. Top risks and trends are aggregated on a global level, then the committee evaluates possible impacts and mitigation strategies. SAP introduced mobile risk reporting in 2012, bringing real-time transparency and risk monitoring to all facets of the company. Each month, local risk managers report on country and entity risks, which are then reviewed regionally. SAP’s Audit Committee also conducts ongoing discussion of risk and oversees automated quarterly executive risk reporting via mobile device.

SAP’s mobile GRC app uses this information to aggregate up-to-date risk reporting for board members and executive staff, delivered via mobile device. The result: Executives have the information they need to discuss, collaborate on, and make risk-based decisions, anywhere and at any time.

For example, a top SAP executive about to meet with the general manager of SAP Mexico might use her iPad to pull up the latest regional risk management report – entering the discussion with full knowledge of risks and opportunities specific to the region. Another executive calls his mobile risk application his “mission control center” – an essential tool that keeps him up to date on what’s happening in his group. Before and during customer visits, he has real-time access to risk information and automated reporting on personnel, payments, recent purchases, and customer problems and interactions. All this supports more effective business decisions.

Best practices for mobile risk management include real-time mobile access to a single point of truth for risk assessments, maximizing transparency and supporting immediate risk evaluation and course correction.

Mobile Compliance Management for Import and Export

Mobile GRC apps work equally well for field employees, and can be customized by business, industry, and role. For example, the new mobile compliance management app developed by SAP Services supports compliance with international export and import regulations, including embargo checks. A built-in simulation tool lets workers check license requirements for goods under negotiation, as well as flagging current embargoes against any countries where business partners are located. Use it to screen and detect critical compliance issues, flag possible adverse effects on global trading, and avoid problematic transactions. Discover and apply for all necessary licenses and authorizations before actual export or import, saving time and avoiding costly violations and delays.

Buying fabric in Indonesia? Bananas in Brazil? Use the compliance management app to make sure all required certificates are current – and will remain so when a product is actually shipped. Simply input the product, country of origin, ship-to address, quantity, and unit of measure. The app checks both compliance and status of import or export licenses, eliminating lengthy back-and-forth while assuring adherence to the latest industry and legal regulations.
