Time+ Talent+ Technology = Environmental Hackathon To Save The Planet!

Coming Feb 2013, I am completing my 1st year journey in Singapore. Professionally and personally there are lots of things I learnt in Singapore. Also I have a thought to give back my thanks to Singapore in any way.

Though I have opportunity to support needy people, boost my fellow friends by teaching human values with meditation, spend time with old age mothers, autism schools and involve community activities.

But what else I could help out the environment, specially the diverging culture, the wonderful public transport, the strict rules of the land, the tremendous architecture of buildings, the birds, the not irritated traffic, the food courts, the weather, the sea, the pets, the cats, the festival celebrations, the high flexed super markets, the living styles, last but not least the people and etc.. How could I help my daily supporters? The warm good morning from the super market cashier on my breakfast bill, changes whole day mood, is it?

One small thing I do always in the supermarket that, I can arrange the goods again the same place, after I got mine, this could reduce the work of the supervisors in the big malls. But most of them others won’t follow. What can be done? I always have such thoughts.

While in this journey, last week I got mail from Simon Dale, about upcoming (26th,27th Jan) Environmental Hackathon in Singapore. Now it is the wonderful opportunity to give back to the society.

It’s environmental Hackathon!! Yes, all the developers sit together for 2 days and bring some wonderful solution which makes true impact on our environment. Last 4 years I was away from coding, focusing more on technology, but last week when I attended the pre dry run for the event. It was interesting and slowly my coding interest also got awaken by the themes of Hackathon, The themes as below,

  1. I will you will challenge
      1. It is the solutions which drive behavior change and quantify the impact of our individual actions. The best idea from this theme going to be adopted as Singapore’s flagship application for this year’s Eart Hour.
  2. Smart Choices
      1. It is the solutions which cab help individuals and businesses optimize energy use, as I said before the supervisor, cashier tasks in the super market can be considered here.
  3. City Solutions
      1. Tackle environmental challenges with creative solutions that help Singapore become ‘A City in a Garden’.

The other interesting thing is that we can use our SAP HANA One, SAP Visi, and SAPnwCloud to support our innovative ideas. Clint Vosloo has already shared the knowledge about HANA one Instance on AWS to all developers. And also SAP given the free HANA one instance access to all the developers with pre-loaded big environmental data from most of the organisation. I also got chance to check those data, its wonderful source. No wonder it triggers the great innovation ideas for saving the world.

Hence I decided to allocate couple of hours on my weekends to support the developers on Hackathon in HANA One and SAPVisi areas.

Thanks to Simon Dale  for given this opportunity to me, its going to be memorable weekend.

Through this blog I would like to invite all our people in SAP to support Hackathon Singapore by sharing your own idea on the themes and also help our developers. if we all cooperate then, we will all bring the true impact on the world by our time, talent and technology.

Please tweet as to your ideas either @shivjansi, @vosloo777, @SimonDSAP, @marekkowal. Hash Tag is #Upenviro.

The motive behind my writing is to bring everyone attention to one theme as SAVE THE EARTH by all the ways we can, if I started to list down the tasks we can serve, it never finishes, but after all also, some time we may feel that we don’t have anything to give back to world, But remember we have wonderful treasure as our thoughts, save our thoughts, be positive, just spread the good wishes by our thoughts as much we can!! This is also help to save the planet!! : 🙂

Very nice blog and initiative Jansi 🙂

It's a bit tough to come up with ideas for this highly automated island-state, but perhaps it could be something with regards to smart-metering. But not just smart-metering per household, like what the utilities companies are doing, but even per device. Connect meters to the biggest energy consumers (fridge, aircon, water boiler, etc) and make people aware of what they actually consume and cost. And of course consolidate the numbers on a higher level to show CO2 emissions per area etc.

      Have fun during the hackaton!

      Hi Jansi,

Thanks for your support during the weekend, also to Clint for his help in the prep - couldn't have done it without you.

Congrats goes to the UP Singapore team for organising the event - more details from them at

There were 13 pitches and they all connected well with the challenge to make Earth Hour more engaging.  There was lots of good combinations of social and mobile, and in the end the judges chose the 5 Degrees team for their idea to gamify and mobilize I Will If You Will - congrats folks!
