ABAP Development on SAP HANA

With SAP NetWeaver Business Warehouse and SAP Business Suite, two major standard SAP applications can run on SAP HANA as primary database.

This allows to benefit from the speed and innovations of the SAP In Memory technology in the context of the proven SAP NetWeaver infrastructure.

SAP NetWeaver AS ABAP 7.4 offers a set of tools, development options, and examples for customers and partners for accelerating and extending their ABAP based solutions on SAP HANA. This includes opportunities to push data intensive calculations to the database (e.g. using views and database procedures) and combining transactional and analytical aspects for the end-user in real-time.

The integrated development environment  in Eclipse based on the SAP HANA Studio and the ABAP Development Tools for SAP NetWeaver support ABAP developers in End-to-End application development from the database access to the user interface.

Combining these capabilities with innovations in ABAP 7.4 that are independent of SAP HANA (such as new capabilities in the development and server infrastructure) creates new opportunities for custom development with SAP NetWeaver AS ABAP.

Explore the ABAP Development on SAP HANA step by step using ABAP for SAP HANA Reference Scenario Open Items Analysis which is an integral part of the SAP NetWeaver AS ABAP 7.4 delivery.

To test-drive SAP NetWeaver Application Server ABAP 7.4 on SAP HANA, learn more about its new capabilities and the programming language enhancements you can get and run your own trial instance provided as virtual appliance by the SAP Cloud Appliance Library.

Summary

SAP responds to the needs of its customers to reduce the cost of development and operation and to bring innovation into existing landscapes without disrupting business processes and further minimizing business downtime. SAP has invested significantly in the cloud market, in in-memory technology, and in innovative mobile technology and applications. SAP NetWeaver 7.4 and SAP HANA Cloud form an application infrastructure and technology platform that provides powerful support for these investments. It enables customers to optimize applications for SAP HANA and, using tools based on the popular Eclipse development environment, quickly and easily build lightweight applications that not only run on the cloud, but integrate with SAP Business Suite back-end systems, bringing innovation across your landscape to your mobile users.

Thanks for such a valuable update. However, I'd like to know whether this release is same as that HANA Portal that SAP was planning to release? I initially heard about HANA Portal sometime last year. If this is indeed HANA Portal, then can we consider 7.4 as a successor of 7.3 already?

      Hi Ameya,

no, SAP NetWeaver Portal 7.4 is the next version of classical SAP NetWeaver Portal. It is not the same as SAP HANA Portal as it is not the same as SAP HANA Cloud Portal.

But you are right in that SAP NetWeaver 7.4 is the successor version of 7.3.

      Thanks Bjoern,

However, I fail to understand the need of releasing 7.4 already! I am working on a 7.3 upgrade project and it seems people are not yet completely versed with changes in 7.3. Companies are still pondering over upgrade to 7.3 and in less than 2 years we have a new version out already. Do we have an upgrade option from portal 7.0 or CE directly to 7.4? Or do we need 7.3 first to move to 7.4?

      Hi Ameya,

please allow me to jump in here to second Björn who always has a rather busy schedule. The Java codelines of NetWeaver 7.31 (which was an enhancement package to NetWeaver 7.30) and NetWeaver 7.4 are identical from a feature perspective. The biggest difference is on the ABAP side where the access to SAP HANA has been greatly optimized including the overall NetWeaver support of the Business  Suite on SAP HANA intiative. SAP NetWeaver 7.4 is our new go-to release for SAP NetWeaver customers but the concrete feature difference to previous NetWeaver versions varies with the concrete setup of your solution landscape. Please consider SAP note 1843183 (available on Service Marketplace) which documents the staggered delivery of 7.4 and possible upgrade paths to 7.4 from previous NetWeaver releases in detail.

      Best regards

      Karl

Very good info. Is there trial version HANA available for free similar to ABAP trial version which can be installed in our PC?? or is it a paid service??

There's no trial version to install on your PC. But check out the SAP HANA One site where you can find out how to easily try out HANA on the Amazon Cloud!

      Hi Kurt,

I've just posted the link to our NetWeaver 7.4 Presentation Slides at the beginning of the page. The document offers a "ready-to-read" version of NetWeaver 7.4 innovations for fans of print-outs.

      Hello Monika,

I would imagine that NetWeaver 7.4 can run without problem the SAP Virus Scan Interface (NW-VSI); can you confirm this, thanks in advace.

      Regards,

      Hugo Mendoza.

Additionally, it would help if you include the link for NetWeaver 7.4-NW-VSI for configuration; and confirms a AS ABAP and Java is required for the Virus Scan Server.

And sample links of NW-VSI landscapes, thanks in advance.

The documentation about VSI is available at:

      http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw74/helpdata/en/ba/e63e5a44263941aa2c9e87a25b176f/frameset.htm

or here from secure programming guide:

      http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw74/helpdata/en/6d/e6c3076f1243d0a133d1b5fb991412/content.htm

The Virus Scan Server (RFC Server) is a separate component and can work together with both, ABAP and/or Java.

However it is recommended to use AV inside the Appserver and not on an extra Server, see architecture:

Thanks Markus, your help is appreciated; I am only missing NW-VSI landscapes examples (DEV, QA, PRod, etc), thanks in advance for any input provided.

We have customized ABAP development on Netweaver 7.3. If we upgrade to 7.4 based on HANA, is it possible for us to expand the database schema and develop new functions using non-ABAP programming languages while keeping the legacy functions from ABAP development?

      thanks!

      Jenny

      Hi Jenny,

I am not sure whether you plan to migrate your existing NetWeaver 7.3 to 7.4 with SAP HANA or to upgrade to 7.4 while keeping your existing database. When you move to SAP HANA native HANA programming models (e.g. server side JavaScript with HANA XS) become available in addition to ABAP and Java. The native HANA artifacts are stored in different schemas and therefore kept separately from ABAP and Java.

If you keep your existing database ABAP and Java are available as usual.

      Hi Abdul,

I just added the link to the roadmap in the top most box. So the link is new, but the roadmap was already published end of March. A new article is in the works to be published soon, pls stay tuned.

In general you should just look into the box (top level items prefixed with a date which shows when a new info object was published). Hope that helps.
