It's not only shoppers benefiting from mobile apps. SAP has mobile apps retailers use to get insight into shoppers needs and activities. Here is my blog about how retailers can rapidly get up and running with Shopper Insight:
Be a Retail IT Superhero, without Bending Steel
Another important part of the mobile retail experience.
About Mobile Retail, the Mobility Innovation Center (MIC) has built 2 prototypes dealing with the Consumer and Store manager experience. It also leverages indoor localisation technology, for defining location based offers as well as giving directions to the consumer.
Here are the internal links for the prototypes :

Or, the more realistic scenario... Customer walks into store, sees product in person, uses smartphone to order at a lower price elsewhere (Amazon, etc). Just saying that big box stores are being negatively impacted with empowered customers, as well. These scenarios just do not seem very realistic to me.
