Easier Migration to SAP BW powered by SAP HANA…
…with ABAP Post-Copy Automation
for SAP Business Warehouse (SAP BW)
To reduce downtime in your production landscape, one of the recommended migration paths from SAP BW to SAP BW on SAP HANA comprises a system copy of your SAP BW system. The system copy procedure of SAP BW systems and landscapes is complex for a number of reasons however. There are a large number of configuration settings (such as connections and delta queue handling for data loading) and system copy scenarios of SAP BW (each with different landscape aspects) for example that have to be handled as part of every system copy, regardless of whether the system copy is part of the migration to SAP HANA or if you want to perform regular system copies of your SAP BW landscape.
SAP NetWeaver Landscape Virtualization Management offers preconfigured “task lists” used by the ABAP task manager for lifecycle management automation. You can also enable SAP BW powered by SAP HANA to “go productive” with the parallel operation of your existing production system, both connected to the same back end systems. This is achieved using a special and unique automated solution for delta queue cloning and synchronization on the production systems. SAP note 886102 (SMP logon required) thus becomes obsolete. Using the post-copy automation for SAP BW (BW PCA) in the migration process from SAP BW to SAP BW on SAP HANA, this process can be shortened by weeks and becomes easier, faster and more reliable.

Good to see another use case in the SAP data centers supported! Great work! There's support available from SAP Services in case you neither have sufficient skills nor ressources to set up PCA accordingly. For any inquiry or request just drop an e-mail to virtualization-services@sap.com
Really Great Source of Information.
Thanks For Sharing it, Keep ths sprit up
Hi,
Thanks for sharing
Phani.
Does PCA require purchase of LVM licenses ? Or is it part of BW?
Thanks.
Hi,
you can use the tool free of charge, if it is used in conjunction with a migration to BW on HANA.
See the Document - SAP First Guidance - BW Housekeeping and BW-PCA
how to activate the LVM license
Best Regards
Roland
Hi,
just a comment on that: PCA (including ABAP PCA, BW PCA, and Java PCA) is a component of SAP Landscape Virtualization Management (LVM) and hence needs to be licensed accordingly. This tool is not free of charge as stated. Please get in touch with your SAP Account Executive or Jens Rolke (jens.rolke@sap.com) for further information.
Thanks & best regards,

"This is achieved using a special and unique automated solution for delta queue cloning and synchronization on the production systems"
It's not clear this automated solution for delta queue.. there are some documents that explain this in detail?
Thank you

Hello Michaela,
Thanks for providing this information.
And two questions about this pic:
Q1: If the source BW is not a dual-stack split, then step 1 does not exist and step 3 copies the BW source system, right?
Q2: For these two parallel systems, does the source BW work during the whole upgrade+migration?
Thanks & Best Regards,
Tong Ning
Hi,
First of all, the pic is correct from the Kontext, however the target system is now 7.40 and Dual Stack Split is no option, it's a must.
Answer Q1: BW-BCA works with ABAP BW. for SAP JAVA based system there is no such procedure. There is a similar thing for copying JAVA system, but no "JAVA DMO option".
Answer Q2: the source BW is only down during the export of the database content, then the source system is always online.
Please refer to the Document - http://scn.sap.com/docs/DOC-59250 which is the latest reference for this Topic.

Michaela, An interesting post. Would PCA be of any help with migration of a system (not duplication-copy) with a SID change? I.e. to help resolve delta pointer corruption issues when the SID changes.
Hi,
Yes, BW-PCA can be used for a SID change, as this is the main purpose of it.
I use this functionality regulary for my BW system copies as well.
Best Regards
