I am Vanya from Bulgaria and I am happy to have been included in the chain by Moshe – my best friend in my SCN endeavors.
I was hesitant when he first asked me because I did not believe I have intriguing stories to share with you, but then I gave it a second thought. This is such a cool initiative, why not be the first in the chain to tell you a little about my not so well-known country!
About me
I have been an information developer at SAP Labs Bulgaria for 5.5 years. I have participated in a number of interesting projects, the latest of which is the new and cool SAP NetWeaver Cloud platform.
After work, I love my callanetics classes, good books and films and watching cookery programs (a little more than cooking itself).
Many years before I joined SAP, I was born in the beautiful town of Plovdiv - the second biggest after the capital Sofia. It is full of ancient historical sites including a real still operational Roman theatre. Most of my childhood was during the communist regime so I've seen "the best and worst of both worlds".
A fun fact about my country
The best fun fact about Bulgaria is that there is a lot of fun and sun to be had here.
Bulgaria offers something for every taste and type of person. From fine dining and night life for city-lovers, to the real authentic local experience in the countryside.
Just a short drive away from the capital takes you to the beautiful mountains with entertainment all year round – hiking, climbing, mountain biking and great skiing in winter. You can pamper yourself in luxury SPA hotels, or, find an old style family house to stay. And of course, the nice Black sea coast for the summer.
All this is combined with an annual average of up to 300 days of sunshine in some areas.
Another little-known but interesting fact is that Bulgaria produces and exports world-class wines.
What was your dream job as a kid?
Strangely enough, none of my dream jobs or plans involved working in IT.
My very first dream was to be a singer, I had a knocked up wooden mike stand and an improvised mike but it did not take long to realize I was really crap at singing.
Then I had to take on a dream that fits me better and it was being a teacher. My dream came true – after graduating University, I taught English at a military aviation base in Bulgaria – the pilots and engineers were at the time preparing to join NATO. Hope they were diligent students and do not get lost in translation nowadays
What is your favorite place in the world?
I really enjoy traveling abroad and find it difficult to nominate one single place. However boring as it may seem, I am more of a Europe fan. I would always love to go back cruising along the Seine in Paris, or, seeing a fabulous musical show in London, or strolling around the canals in Amsterdam. Another place close to my heart is the south of France – such a beautiful part of our continent.
What was the most fun project you ever participated in and why?
I have had fun participating in many projects, but I genuinely enjoy new projects in which I am involved from the very beginning. Nothing gives me greater pleasure than starting a project from scratch and being able to influence its development and seeing it evolve and succeed with the time. Such is SAP NetWeaver Cloud where we had the freedom to break away from the old-school rules and take on a new approach to documentation. At the same time, we get early feedback and brainstorm for improvements as we go.
The other type of projects I like are the ones that involve community interaction, such as my work on SCN as a moderator for the SAP Technology Troubleshooting space and the docupedia project.
I am also happy to be a volunteer working for the Bulgarian technical writers community for which we organize an annual Evolution of Technical Communications conference – hard but truly rewarding work.
