SAP HANA Cloud Portal: A New Addition to SAP Portal Products Family

We are very happy to announce to our Portal Community that the SAP HANA Cloud Portal (formerly known as SAP NetWeaver Cloud Portal) is being released to customers and is generally available as of October 16, 2012. This solution is a significant enhancement to our product portfolio, further strengthening and broadening our current offerings.

The SAP HANA Cloud portal is a cloud-based solution that provides easy site creation and consumption with a superior user experience, and is designed for mobile consumption. The solution enables a secure and reliable integration with the customer’s on-premise network for leveraging existing on-premise assets.

Cloud Portal Highlights are:

  • Runs on top of SAP HANA Cloud, a standards-based and modular platform-as-a-service solution for Java-based applications, hosted by the SAP public cloud
  • Built to operate with SAP HANA, for in-memory computing
  • Designed for mobile consumption, using HTML5 for dynamic adaptation to a range of different devices
  • Embraces industry technological standards
  • Leveraging existing on-premise investments and the consumption of OpenSocial-based content
  • Outstanding branding and customization capabilities

With monthly development cycles, running in an agile-based development program, we are extending our beta program to allow customers and partners to test and evaluate new capabilities and scenarios developed in the cloud portal, with fully support by the cloud portal product team. Ongoing collaboration, discussions, and feedback sharing will take place throughout the entire beta period.

I'm really impressed with how easy to use this solution is. I'm not sure if it's quite modelling, but it's definitely one of the best platforms for web apps I've seen (although I'm by no means an expert).

I think this platform will have a massive influence going forward, particularly if it can integrate with on-premise and on-demand platforms.

      Keep up the good work!

      Thanks Luke.

We're working both on "on premise" integration and on SAP Cloud apps integration. Some beta customers already tried on premise integration with SAP Enterprise Portal and with Business Suite apps.

This is great, very exciting! I know the first question I have is "what content is available out of the box? or what can be purchased?" right now it sort of feels like a great open platform that needs to be filled with great content... is the plan to have a partner/developer eco-system and/or will will develop content for the platform?

      Thanks,

      Simon

      Hi Simon,

First of all we created an open platform, so SAP and eco-system will easily extend the content. In the first release content is: documents, images, URLs to webapps and web pages, open social widgets, groups of items.

Our team, more teams in SAP and partners are creating content for Cloud Portal.

Cool, finally an answer on the future of the SAP portal. Now we can skip the Twitter discussions on the possible death of the SAP portal 🙂

      Some practical questions

      - Is there a migration path from on premise portal to the cloud one?

      - Will Streamwork be integrated? Bring Streamworks collaboration features to the portal, please.

      - How about licensing?

      Hi Twan,

      Thanks for the comment.

      Short answers:

      - No migration - there will be integration and reuse of content. Cloud portal doesn't replace EP it comes to extend the options for the customer

      - Social & collaboration capabilities will be integrated

      - User based subscription

For more details please follow the community and join tweetchat 5pm CET, Sep 12 to discuss Cloud portal with experts and customers who will share their experience of Cloud portal beta.

Looks promising. Related to SAP Business ByDesign,

      - does it compete with SAP Business ByDesign as PaaS?

      - is it an enhancement to SAP Business ByDesign?

      - is it based on SAP Business ByDesign?

      - is it based on the Success Factors technology?

      - or something completely different..???

      Hi Julian, thanks for asking.

Since you cross-posted your question i already answered it partially in this thread: http://scn.sap.com/docs/DOC-26515

Let me complete the answer here:

NetWeaver Cloud Portal runs on and part of SAP NetWeaver Cloud, which is PaaS solution. This PaaS solution allows development of Java based apps and provides very rich set of services for partners and customers to develop both new solutions and extensions to SAP Cloud and on premise solutions, including extensions to ByDesign and Success Factors apps (through APIs).

You can learn more about the NetWeaver Cloud here: http://scn.sap.com/community/developer-center/cloud-platform

SAP NetWeaver Cloud is not based on SAP Business ByDesign neither on Success Factors technologies rather it extends them.

OK typical techi question. Is this based on the new Jive platform that SAP aquired and now runs SCN on? or is it based on an evolution of Netweaver???

      Author's profile photo Vitaly Vainer
      Vitaly Vainer

      Hi Fenton,

Neither. As described in the article it runs on a new SAP PaaS solution called SAP NetWeaver Cloud. Both NetWeaver Cloud and Cloud Portal were built from the ground as cloud platform and are not incarnations of existing on premise solutions.

You can find more info on the platform here: SAP NetWeaver Cloud portal product info space

      Best regards,

      Vitaly
