SAP developer center makes it possible to get more developers to the SAP platform

One year ago it was not possible to try out any SAP product. A lot have changed since then. Today I just experience this change as I’m talking about on the video.

The developer tools are really a game changer for everybody involved with SAP. Now you don’t need to be a part of a large organization to get access to try tools like HANA. You can just start using it and learn how to use it.

It means that developers need to learn how to develop on HANA or mobile applications; otherwise they will just become the new “Mainframe programmers” or dinosaurs. I do appreciate the skills that most developers have, and especially the business skills.  It will take a long time to acquire the same kind of information on the business.  So for now they may be safe.

I guess the only solution is to keep updated on the newest tools and skills out there. I know that it is time consuming. And there is a lot of other tasks that we need to work with.  How do you invest in your continued education?

I started to share some knowledge about SAP PI process Integration for non-developers.  I believe that it is possible to improve the communication between developers and the business in this context. You can check it out at http://sappiforeverybody.com/

Please rate the post so I know if this is something I should share more about.

  • Daniel,

Thank you for this blog. I remember our discussion a year ago at DKOM when you made it very clear that removing barrier to access systems and knowledge will be key in attracting more developers to use SAP technologies.

I believe that there was great progress done over the last few months with the SAP Developer Center as the center of gravity for developer oriented content and offers, the SAP HANA 30 day trial and the free developer license on AWS as well as the mobile platform 30 days trial and SAP NetWeaver Cloud trial.

We are planning some additional announcements in this area this summer that would expand our offering and clearly following the strategy of removing barriers for developers to engage and without requiring by upfront investment.

This is truly a group effort of the Developer Experience team, Developer Relations team, different product teams, SCN and more with close collaboration with the community and SAP mentors.

Thank you for the collaboration so far. Let’s keep the communication channels open, continue to give us honest feedback and contribute content for the benefit of the community. We will all work together to reshape the way SAP is enabling developers and make SAP’s technologies accessible and relevant to all.

    David.
