TIP: How to stop OS/DB Migration before Import Phase?

Problem

If you’re doing a migration to a database which is installed by SAPINST (like Sybase ASE), and you need to apply certain patches and kernel updates before import, then you’d better to stop process before ABAP/Java import phase.

Here, if the case is kernel application and the minimum required Kernel Patch is supplied with packaged Kernel Patches (SAPEXE…..SAR, SAPEXEDB_…SAR), you can modify the kernel DVD and add latest kernel packs into DVD. But if the latest pack not enough and you’ve to apply the latest disp+work (dw_….sar) and database library (libdbsl_…sar) you’ve to stop the import before abap/java import.

Solution

It is very easy to stop import 😆

Just enter a wrong migration key during SAPINST configuration steps.

Here I used hedehode which has a similar meaning to blabla 😉

You could also use the sapinst parameter SAPINST_SET_STEPSTATE=true

so you can choose any time the installation process will be stopped/paused.

There are many ways to do it...

      1) temp rename the import directory once sapinst is running. It'll prompt error message when it can't find. You can proceed with kernel, R3* upgrade and rename back your import directory once done. Cont from sapinst.

      2) If you are  using migration monitor. you can proceed for kernel + R3* patch before launching migration monitor

      3) After installing oracle software, update kernel + R3* before cont from sapinst.

      Cheers,

      Hi,

SAPINST checks the migration key's validity just before Import phase and warns you if it is wrong. Then it gives you the input field to enter correct key and continues to show the input until you enter the correct key.
