SAP Visual Intelligence – a big step for our Business Analysts
As announced by Vishal Sikka during his SAPPHIRENOW Orlando 2012 Keynote, SAP has just released a new Business Intelligence Application called SAP Visual Intelligence. SAP Visual Intelligence addresses the Data Discovery market. It provides Business Analysts with a single experience for :
- Combining and manipulating various data sources
- Performing Robust Analysis
- Ultimately building and sharing interactive visualizations, leveraging the Mobile Explorer application.
SAP Global IT has been a key actor in this rollout and demos have gone continuously at the “SAP Runs SAP” Pod in the Database & Technology Campus right after the announcement. To read more about the demo sceanarios I ran through, read @Matthias Wilds’ blog. We see a real potential to empower all these Analysts to drive their Business without developing any technical expertise nor relying on an IT department.
Indeed, the BusinessObjects suite is large enough to address any type of need for any type of user, and the fast development of the BI Mobile Analytics is in
the process of fulfilling the need for Mobility. Here comes the question: what happens when the data needs to be cleaned, how do you manage having data in the non Corporate system like a simple Regional Sales Forecast?
These are the types of situations that we all have seen in our companies, whatever the level of maturity of the Information System. Business needs agility and flexibility – and we believe SAP Visual Intelligence will be the right solution to address these needs by enabling a bridge between the Line of Business and IT departments.
It was extremely exciting to drive the first presentations at SAPPHIRENOW and the feedback after each demo at our “SAP Runs SAP” Pod we have heard is very encouraging!
Is this the end of the Enterprise Reporting – with a central BI Platform?
We rather see this as an opportunity of federating our Business to use the complete SAP Business Intelligence suite in any situation – corporate Business Intelligence will remain mandatory and the output of the Visual Intelligence solution could definitely be a global BI solution.
As for the next step?
Beside pursuing our internal deployment, we start now preparing a Hands On for SAP Teched to give the opportunity to a maximum number of attendees to get trained and practice under the guidance of experts. Stay tuned !

I can't wait to get my hands dirty with this tool. After reviewing FAQ's I got the impression, this tool can only be connected against HANA source. Is that correct?
Hope that is not the case.
Thanks
Ravi
This is correct - this first release is HANA Online only - nevertheless the connection to excel files is the next type and is coming very shortly
Can we create many visualization views like in the case of exploration views(BO Explorer) with SAP Visual Intelligence?
Is there a road map for this tool which informs the new features planned?
Thanks,
Naveen.
Hi Naveen,
in the next version, planned in about 1 month, you have the possibility to leverage the output of your dataset within Explorer and Exploration Views.
There is a clear intention of convergence between the 2 for the visualization - with monthly releases to bring new enhancements.
That good news.
Visual Intelligence using Sybase IQ (c:\Program Files\SAP Visual Intelligence\IQ\) ? 😕
Interesting, for what purposes ?
Sybase IQ is used to process the data locally, allowing the Business Analyst to prepare the dataset (acquisition of the sources, merge and transformations) before the final visualizations
thats interesting. 50M for IQ server 😛
Why IQ, why not ASA ?
