Background of material master lock functionality

In certain circumstances there is a business need to lock few material master fields  as lock relevant (The fields should be in a display mode under MM02 transaction) & users shouldn’t be able to change the material master.

Business decides to lock the material fields since these fields might be updated from external interface to SAP or these fields may be critical & only few authorized person can make the update to material master.

How to configure the functionality

Step 1

Make the fields as lock relevant in SPRO

Path: SPRO-> Logistics – General-> Material Master-> Field Selection-> Define Lock-Relevant Fields

For example the field EAN under Basic Data1 is marked as lock relevant as follows

Step2

Execute MM17 & lock the material as follows (Locking & unlocking the fields via MM17 is possible)

Step3

Now the EAN field is in display mode under MM02 & the users will not be able to change the Fields in MM02

Note:

SAP provides auth group M_MATE_MAF where users can lock & unlock the Material master fields in MM02 as shown below

This auth group has to be removed from all the users & should be assigned to few selected persons so that we can lock & unlock the fields using MM17 in a controlled manner.
