I have to admit that just a few years back, when the first generation of the iPhone was released I didn´t really get what´s supposed to be so special about Smartphones. I was happy with my classic mobile phone (used for calls and text messages), my laptop and my Blackberry for work. I considered those devices that you could use as a telephone, MP3 player and camera as nice gadgets for your spare time at best. Never would I have thought that this was the beginning of a mobile revolution that will dramatically change the way people are communicating with each other and how they do business together.

Guess what – I, like many before me, have given up in the meantime, carrying a smartphone and tablet now myself. But it was not only the convenience of going online whenever and wherever I want or the time-saving apps that led to my personal, mobile revolution.  I finally realized that this is the beginning of something big when I heard the compelling stories from our customers that were starting to transform their businesses with mobile technology to make the lives of their employees, customers and partners even more convenient:

Standard Bank South Africa for example leverages SAP Mobile Solutions to offer a new, innovative, banking channel on mobile devices to reach people that did not have access to day-to-day banking services before. Check out their video on YouTube:

Another story that demonstrates the power of mobile, especially if it is being used in conjunction with new technology such as In-Memory Computing, is the one from the largest university hospital in Europe.

Charite in Germany uses SAP HANA paired with SAP Electronic Medical Record (SAP EMR) to handle patient data much faster with in-memory technology and to make this information available on mobile devices at the fingertip. Check out their video on YouTube:

Those are just two examples that testify to the huge impact that mobile is having on businesses and consumers - and this is just the beginning. I can´t wait to hear the latest and greatest about SAP Mobile Solutions and more fascinating stories from our customers at SAPPHIRE NOW starting today. If you didn´t build your mobile agenda for the event yet, check out the “Eleven Intriguing Mobile Sessions at SAPPHIRE NOW in Orlando” posted by eric.lai.

Don´t miss the discussions about latest trends like gamification (see article from tim.clark) and "Bring Your Own Device" (BYOD) as we will for sure be hearing more about these moving forward. I am not really into man purses, so BYOD would definitely help me to reduce the number of devices I have to carry in my pocket - and prevent me from dropping them.
