Claudius Metze, one of our SAP Healthcare Solution Owners that focuses on our healthcare mobile suite of applications, and currently focused on the SAP Electronic Medical Record app, recently read an article “Voice Recognition: has it come of age?” - http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/2011/nov/20/voice-recognition-apple-siri?newsfeed=true.  This prompted him to pose the question “What is your view on voice recognition in Healthcare?”

Like all respondents, I feel  that voice recognition is a “must-have” and “game-changer” for healthcare.  It will improve the efficiency and quality of care.  One respondent said, imagine a care provider being able to just pick up your mobile device and speak the patient name and be presented with the patient and to then just say results, orders, meds, etc. to get to the workflow the provider needs.

Basically, everyone can speak faster than they can type.  Therefore, voice recognition can only make clinical applications more effective and easier to use.  And voice recognition technology is at a point where it is not cost prohibitive and where it can definitely increase the productivity of healthcare providers, by increasing accuracy, speed, and ease of use.

The upcoming SAP Electronic Medical Record v2 will have voice recognition functionality by providing an interface to third-party voice recognition solutions, such as Nuance, which has proven very effective.
