Prerequisite for Migration Activity -BW on HANA

Gradually the SAP BW customers (near about 16000)who currently uses the RDBMS database like DB2, ORACLE, now thinking about HANA. At least they give some time to understand HANA and its features and noticed how HANA will be beneficial for their business. I am quite sure that this current thinking will become the deciding factor during next license upgrade scenario of their  current RDBMS database.

Probably the next 3-4 years will be called in the history as SAP Migration era (Fingers crossed). Because all the current RDBMS is going to convert into HANA within these time period. Not only that SAP comes with ECC on HANA end of 2012. So more migration activity.

As I am so called technical consultant so I just wanted to discuss some technical stuff about this migration activity. Once we decided that we are going to migrate our current db to HANA we have to checked out following things

First, We can migrate our current environment into HANA in three different ways. They are

-> Full Migration

-> Phased Migration

-> Mixed Environment

I will discuss about these different migration environment in details in my next blog. In this blog we are going to discuss the prerequisite for Full Migration scenario only.

The following source databases are supported for the migration. That means to say that only the below mentioned database can be migrated to HANA.

Oracle 11.2, IBM DB2 LUW 9.7, MaxDB 7.8, MS SQL server 2008, DB2 for i61, 7.1, DB2 for z/OS V9, V19

Your kernel version should be in the below mentioned level. For Database-dependent parts: R3load patch level (PL) 110, dbsl  PL 110,  and for Database-independent parts: SAPEXE PL 100. SAP recommend that you should upgrade your source system kernel to patch 110.

Your current BW system should be SAP NetWeaver SPS05, if not then you have to upgrade it to this level. Also if your current SAP NetWeaver BW system is ABAP + JAVA, then you need to separate the ABAP stack from the JAVA before we proceed. This is because currently JAVA is not supported by HANA database. It’s good that you convert your source into Unicode before this activity or what you can do is that you can do this during migration. Those are the prerequisite on the BW site. On the other hand your HANA should be in SPS03 level.
