One Big Happy Family: The New SCN and the Wiki
While the wiki (click here) was not changed during the new SCN Launch, there are some important nuances I want to help clarify. For example the best time to add your content to the wiki, introduction of our new strategy for linking to the wiki, and explanation of the changes made to wiki points allocation.
What content should be posted on the wiki?
The new SCN offers a large variety of ways to contribute content: Blog posts, Discussions, documents and more. These multiple options probably make you wonder when to contribute content through one of them versus in the wiki. The wiki offers a lot of advanced navigation features that are aimed to address large quantities of topic related pages organized in categories, subcategories and sub-sub categories. Therefore for content that requires multiple layered hierarchies, or that will eventually need such structure the wiki is recommended.
Example for content organization/navigation using the page tree macro in the wiki:
Linking to the wiki
In the past, the wiki homepage was linked from the top site navigation. However, user testing showed that it confused members. Therefore in the new SCN we implemented a linking strategy to all wiki content, to align it with the new taxonomy of spaces and related content. This change will help you associate your content with existing SCN topics, and help members to find the wikis based on the topics. It brings together all content under the appropriate topic regardless of whether it’s a wiki, blog, discussion or document. in the new SCN as well as in the related wiki space. Each topic space and sub-space will have links to its relevant wiki spaces on the left side navigation menu of the main overview page. For example please see the CRM space below:
If you can’t find a link to your wiki in the related New SCN space/subspace please let me know.
Points allocation in the wiki
Before Launch of new SCN |
After Launch of new SCN |
Moderators grant discretionary points using the “Add Points” button. These points are allocated immediately. |
Moderators grant discretionary points using the “Add Points” button. These points will be granted once a month. |
Wiki page creators and editors receive all create/edit points once every quarter. |
Wiki page creators and editors receive create / edit points immediately upon posting. |
A user has the ability to request additional points using the “Request Points” button. |
The “Request Points” will be removed. Users can request additional points via the comments on the relevant pages. |
The wiki remains an integral part of SCN, especially when structure and collaboration are needed. Please reach out to me if you have additional questions or comments.
Also be sure to follow me to be updated on future upgrades/modifications.
is there some link that explains the new points system on SCN?
It would help the contributors to understand the new model better
Hi Shabarish,
You can find more information in the Contributor Reputation Program FAQ, which sits in the About SCN space.

Sorry, the page you requested can't be found. You can go back and try again, or start again at home.
Hi,
Thanks, I've contacted the author. The links are supposed to connect you to the content shown in the page so you can just scroll down.

Moshe
any idea how long this link is going to be supported: wiki.sdn.sap.com ?
The wiki is experiencing one of its best eras and is not planning to go anywhere:). So you can keep being active as you are in the wiki.
Moshe, this is so excellent. I wish I had seen this before I penned my blurb: http://scn.sap.com/thread/3149648
It would have saved Brendan from tearing out a clump or two of his hair LOL. One thing I would like to see though, is the same discipline that Brendan would like to achieve with wiki formats being applied to Jive documents. For example the wiki training Brendan put together is very, very good (part of the training is included as a screenshot in the above link). And there was a good reason for why we needed it. For details, see the above thread (e.g.; consistency, professionalism, etc., etc.).

Hi,
I'm happy this blog helped:). I'm a Brendan fan for a long time and it is a great pleasure to work with him so closely:). Our teams are aligned and will continue to be on future Primary Support SCN training.
Please let me know if you need any further assistance/information.

Moshe
hi
could you please tell how to navigate to wiki scn home page using the scn.sap.com jive spaces?
Deep Bhalla,
for some strange reason, putting 'wiki.sdn.sap.com' into the google search field shows much better results than the search function on scn. some spaces have links to wiki's, but i haven't seen one easy navigation link off the page mast. i think that can be fixed in the future if there's enough interest in the wiki space.
good luck!
Hi Gregory,
Thank you for a great answer. We did start to work on improving the Jive->Wiki navigation. I will update once I have news.
Regards,
Moshe
thanks Gregory

Hi,
Please raise this question in our support forum:

Hi Moshe,
I am still confused with the new "Navigation" and where are old functions are.
Question : How can i search only in Wiki pages directly after i logged in ?
Hi Kai,
Thank you for reaching out. I guess this is a learning experience to all of us:) . Which old functions are you missing?
In order to search only in the wiki, you could search using the wiki search which is in the top right hand side of the screen ( below the site search). Please let me know if you have more questions.
You could also use our Google customized search:

How does one get to the Wiki? Please be specific, like click this, click that.
Thanks.
Hi,
Thank you for your input and I appolgize for the confusion. I made it more clear in the begining of the blog where should you click in order to get to the wiki.
Regards,
Moshe
Hi Moshe,
thanks for the link http://wiki.sdn.sap.com/wiki/display/WHP/Home , but somewhere should be a navigational link ?
Regarding the search and your answer:
>In order to search only in the wiki, you could search using the wiki search which is in >the top right hand side of the screen ( below the site search).
I see the site search only when i am in the wiki. So i have to go first to the wiki homepage and search from there.
Hi,
Yes, the wiki search is visible in the wiki pages themselves.
What do you mean by a navigational link?
Hi Moshe,
i mean if i want to go to Downloads, Code Exchange,or Idea Place in SCN, i login at http://scn.sap.com and click on the top at Downloads, Code Exchange or Idea Place.
What link on SCN do i have to click to navigate to the Wiki if I don't have the direct Wiki link available ? Please don't say "Please bookmark the wiki link for yourself".
Regards,
Kai
Hi Kai,
I understand your concern. We are hoping that people will find their wiki via the relevant Jive spaces.
we are trying to think of other navigational solutions. I will update you once we implemented them.
Thank you,
Moshe
Make things simple. Make them explicit. Make them stand out. Spell things out. Do not use icons. Do not bury links under link after link, page after page.
Kai,
i have bookmarked the top of my area of interest and after logging in it's the easiest way for me to find what is of interest to me on the wiki. yours will most probably be different in detail but not in "structure" :
http://wiki.sdn.sap.com/wiki/pages/listpages-dirview.action?key=ERPFI&openId=4394#selectedPageInHierarchy
Gregory Great start thanks.
How can i upload a document ( word/pdf ) i have created on SCN so that others can use it ?
If I use the create document / blog / wiki option I will have to wirte the whole document again along with attaching screenshots.
Dear Virag, Uploading document to SCN only limited to sap workers and sap registered partners. Regards.
Thanks for the reply Said . Looks like to document is just going to stay with me.
One thing you could do is create Jive Document. Then simply copy and paste the contents of your MS Word doc into the Jive document. Save. Perhaps minor adjustments, save and voila.
Hi Ludek , by Jive Document , do you mean the create document option on the SCN menu ( See screenshot attached). I have tried this option and i cannot copy images from my word document into this. I have aroung 65 screenshots in the document. I will have to save each one on my desktop and upload them one by one in this option.
If this is not the Jive Document you were referring to then please let me know. Thanks
Ouch, darn. Yeah, 65 screenshots - painful - understood. What product / area are you thinking of putting this document into? Just thinking I may be able to help somehow, if it's in an area / product I have a bit of knowledge / control over. But it should not be this hard. I'll ping a few people see what else we may be able to do.
- Ludek
Thanks for the help Ludek .
I wanted to upload a step by step configuration guide for 'Customizing Employee Self Service in EHP5 ' under area 'SAP ERP HCM Employee Self-Service' . I can create it in the SCN Content format ( Word doc) and send it to a moderator if they can review and upload it.
Yup. Stand by, let's see if I can do something there. SAP ERP HCM is way out of my league 🙂 .
- Ludek
Hello Virag
I finally have a solution for us. I'll email you directly.

Hi Moshe,
I'm not able to find the wiki pages i created in old SCN. When i navigate to http://scn.sap.com/content and fliter by clicking the "Authored" link, i don't see any of the wiki pages i created earlier. Kindly help.

Can you find them using the Google customized search?

Hi Moshe,
I'm able to find the wiki pages when i search with relevent keywords in the Google customizd search. Is there any other way to see the wiki pages in my profile or content as it used to be in old SCN? Thanks.
